I love to fish and I love to hike. Getting paid to hike the scenic creeks of the Sixes basin and supporting important scientific research through the data I collect on the 2024 salmon run is an adventure and an experience that does not feel like work. I am responsible for surveying 30 locations on a 11 day rotation. The data I collect (size, species, hatchery, numbers, ect.) is used to determine the health of the population and is used to set the salmon takes for the 2025 salmon season. One of the key roles of this positon is safety. The terrain is rugged and being prepared through packing and developing safe paths upstream to effectively and efficiently survey the streams is important because help is often hours away and cell phone reception is spotty.

I believe in investing in my children. My daughters are my greatest accomplishment to date. By devoting my time, energy, and resources into their unquie experiences and beneficial habits i beleive they will turn out to be even more amazing than they already are.They are high energy and high intelligence and require specialized attention and unique challenges to grow. For example my 8 year old Evely shares my interests in cooking. One ingredient we really enjoy using is mushrooms. Over the years we have been on a journey together learning all the varieties of gourmet mushrooms we can pick (and the deadly ones not to pick) together on our hikes at cape arago and that evolved into an interest to grow mushrooms like we grow plants in our garden. We started with some easy ones like wine caps and oysters mushrooms by buying the spawn and fruiting out on a bulk substrate in the garden. Since then we have gone to the next level with a temperature and humidity controlled room for fruiting. Most recently we constructed a lamanar flow hood together which has allowed us to collect various sappotrophic fungi in the forest and from the grocery store and create our own mushroom cultures from tissue and spores. This hobby has given my child a chance to learn useful skills like measuring and also to learn about a very important part of ecosystem and in the process given our family a high quality source of food. I am trying to teach my children that anything is within their abilities if they just spend time doing the research and learning from those with experience. My youngest has now started school so I am able to explore new work opportunities.
