Greg Stott is a semi-retired senior geoscientist based in Sudbury, Ontario. Greg has mapped in various Precambrian terranes in Nunavut, Quebec, and Ontario since 1968, and had been employed by the Ontario Geological Survey from 1981 to 2011. He did his undergraduate studies in geology at McMaster University, completed his MSc at the University of Waterloo on a structural study in the Grenville Province and his PhD at the University of Toronto on the structural geology of the Shebandowan greenstone belt and its tectonic setting. This led him, through his subsequent work with the OGS, to recognize by 1987 that the western Superior Province appeared to have been assembled progressively during the Neoarchean as a series of orogenies, and that selective dating of transpressive events across terrane boundaries could date this assembly. For much of his career, he has been focussing on the regional-scale stratigraphic framework and tectonic setting of greenstone belts, especially in northwestern Ontario. As a consequence, he has published a substantial number of geological maps of various scales across this region. He is the author or co-author of over 150 maps, reports, articles and papers. As co-editor and co-author of the Geology of Ontario special volume and maps, which were published in 1991-92 as a centennial project for the OGS, he introduced to the Superior Province the concept of tectonic assemblages, used by Canadian Cordilleran researchers, which serves as a tectonostratigraphic foundation for Archean greenstone belts. This has subsequently been fairly widely adopted in the Precambrian. Greg has been instrumental over the years in building and revising the terrane subdivisions of the Superior Province in conjunction with colleagues at the Geological Survey of Canada and the provincial surveys of Manitoba and Quebec. Greg serves as an adjunct professor in the Harquail School of Earth Sciences, Laurentian University.
