The Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative (www.dsni.org) is a multicultural grassroots organizing and planning organization. Once ravaged by racist policies and practices including redlining, disinvestment and arson-for-profit, this community of poor African American, Cape Verdean, Latino and white residents organized and DSNI became the first nonprofit community-based organization to be granted the power of eminent domain over all abandoned properties within its boundaries. As executive director I secured funding to construct a 10,000 square foot greenhouse – an anchor of one of the nation’s first urban agriculture programs.
