National (Senior) It Director, Supply Chain SystemsUnfi Nov 2018 - Feb 2020Providence, Ri, UsAfter acquisition of SuperValu by UNFI I continued to be the key IT Leader of former Unified Grocers West Coast IT Operations, as well as IT Leader for SuperValu warehousing and transportation systems until full integration with UNFI core ERP system was complete. During this time, I personally led the IT effort to update the UG fleet of 250+ trucks to be compliant with the federal Electronic Logging Device (ELD) mandate, including onboard computer hardware, software, and SAAS interfaces to Descartes’ TMS application. Collaborated with software vendor, Descartes Systems, to assist vendor in finishing requirements, piloting, and the successful implementation of their new RF-based on-board trucking solution. This was a huge time-dependent effort due to the Government deadlines and assisting Descartes in the completion of their next-gen onboard application. The innovative RF-based approach allowing drivers to share their handheld device with government officials without being tethered to the truck by a communications cable.Led the upgrade of the legacy conveyor system at a large 1.5MM square foot DC from existing SeayCo legacy platform to new Automation systems by Dematic. I functioned as the overall Project Manager for the entire upgrade that included new Conveyor Sorter, PLCs, application servers, integration and redundancy, reducing huge risk and saving millions of dollars annually through improved sorter throughput, less product damage, and more accurate Customer deliveries. -
National (Senior) It Director, Supply Chain SystemsSupervalu Jun 2017 - Oct 2018Eden Prairie, Mn, UsKey IT Leader responsible for supporting acquisition of Unified Grocers (UG) by SuperValu. Served as trusted IT advisor to SuperValu Executive Team to develop strategy, budget and plans to integrate existing UG ERP, 6 Distribution Centers, and associated WMS/LMS/TMS systems, into the SuperValu ERP. I managed the entire related IT project portfolio, met the aggressive 2-year timeline, and achieved $20MM+ expense reduction as planned. I also, led all software development, including two very creative architectural designs. First, was the creation of a “wrapper” around all UG Retail applications, allowing them to continue to run standalone, which protected the UG wholesale Customers. And secondly, developed an API-based capability within the SuperValu ERP system that allowed UG warehousing systems and transportation systems to “plug” into the existing SuperValu ERP system. This became a huge strategic advantage that greatly simplified future acquisitions. This also included a remarkable industry achievement of converting 4 DCs on the same day! Afterwards, became a Senior IT Leader at Supervalu responsible for warehousing and transportation systems, including a national supply chain network of 25 DCs and a private fleet of 1,000+ trucks. Led delivery of >$10MM in supply chain systems upgrades and savings. -
Executive Director, Information TechnologyUnified Grocers Jun 2005 - Jun 2017Reinvented IT Delivery, including 120+ direct and indirect reports, including rebranding and cultural transformation to a consultative, agile, approach. Created new IT Vision/Mission Statements and met regularly with CEO and Executive Team to align and prioritize IT Portfolio.Spearheaded strategic Mainframe Modernization initiative including RFP, technical architecture, vendor selection, program management, oversight for software delivery, and overall communications program. Financial expectations were met delivering $2MM savings upon implementation. Architecture approach included a Microsoft .NET front-end, converting the back end to Micro Focus Cobol, and consolidating redundant legacy DB2, IDMS and VSAM file systems to a single SQL Server platform. Led the development an offshore program by evaluating several vendors. Managed vendor relationship with Cognizant to greatly augment in-house staff, improve speed of software delivery, and reducing IT labor costs annually by $2MM+. Launched an Enterprise Architecture Program, including all IT disciplines, based on Gartner methodology. Worked directly with Gartner, and internal IT Leaders, to develop a 4-tier architectural model, including Business, Solution, Data and Technical architectures. I staffed the positions of these 4 architectural domains by empowering in-house Leaders and Teams, resulting in huge commitment and satisfaction! Spearheaded creation of a comprehensive Enterprise Portal program, including fully integrated Retailer, Supplier, Buyer, and Employee portals, a public facing website, and a SharePoint Intranet. Significant revenue was generated through online B2B marketing of grocery products/services, and cost savings were achieved through a new integrated workflow including both internal and customer-facing processes. Advanced functionality included support for highly perishable products, and an innovative integration with the Global Data Synchronization network (GDSN GS1).

Director, Information TechnologyUnified Grocers May 2000 - May 2005Modernized legacy ERP systems with purchased and in-house developed software that reduced inventory >20%, enabled increased itemization, and achieved operational savings of $6MM. New Business Architecture included innovative 3PL capabilities, Distributed Order Management (DOM), Flow-Through distribution of non-warehoused product, and SAAS-enabled Buying and Fulfillment services. Solution Architecture involved consolidating file systems into a common DB2 database and replacing WMS/LMS systems in 6 DCs with best-of-breed vendor applications. Invented an innovative “horizontal” supply chain model for Distributors/Wholesalers that greatly improved the traditional vertical manufacturing model into a much simpler/flatter “Distributor friendly” model. The new approach greatly reduced cost of storage, transfers, and delivery times while adding tremendous sourcing flexibility through an innovative Supplier-to-Customer feature set to easily configure warehoused, flow-through, and drop-ship methods between partners. Launched the implementation of Microsoft Dynamics for UG’s Bakery and Dairy plants. This resulted in major improvements in replenishment of raw materials, formulation consistency, real-time visibility to the manufacturing process, such as raw milk separation, through use of real-time production gauge input. Also greatly improved production planning, product changeovers, labor management and Lot Control. Orchestrated the modernization of legacy TMS solutions for the entire UG supply chain network. Implemented CAMS Pro dynamic routing/dispatch solutions. Led development of a custom Distributed Order Management (DOM) solution to parse Customer orders to the most cost-effective DC ship-point and implemented Descartes Proof-of-Delivery (mPOD) for deliveries. These solutions saved millions of dollars annually through reduced fleet mileage, better truck/trailer utilization, and driver accountability for delivery SLAs, safety, and equipment care.
