Depression, Drug Abuse, and Suicide are at epidemic levels with 10-15% of youth experiencing mental health related issues; but only 20% are ever identified and treated. It takes a trained eye; especially when kids hide their feeling due to the stigma often associated.Mental health is the most treatable of all diseases, yet Illinois ranks last in the country in terms of it's investment in related social services. We are suffering the consequences with suicide rates that rank only 2nd to auto accidents in terms of teen fatalities.Alexian Brothers Mental Health is a key alliance partner because they developed and deployed a campus mental health education, intervention, and treament program in response to a suburban Barrington School District's request after they experienced 7 suicides in 2009.Cost? $50/student/year for a typical campus.The 3 year pilot was expanded to include most of School Dist 214 (6-HS's, 1-JH) and ended last summer, having served more than 15,000 students resulting in over 500 individual interventions. Last year alone they hospitalized 86 teens for observation and treatment.
