VERITAS was a large software company dedicated to commercial software sold mostly to businesses large and small. The group I joined built a backup product called Backup Exec. This was a large development team that grew from about 20 developers to over 100 eventually. I started as a senior software developer and ultimately became the lead developer for one of the component teams. While on this team, we started with a C based GUI code base and transitioned it to MFC and C++, modernizing the code base. Being a large environment, we had a QA team, source code control, formal design processes and other common traits of a large software project. I coded, wrote and reviewed design documents, and mentored others. I also interviewed candidates, and became part of an architecture team for the product.

I was employee #3 at Appian if you count the 2 co-founders as #1 and #2. It was a start up that was doing work on a contractual basis for Computer Associates. Being a small company (yes they hired more people after me), you really had to pull your own weight and get the job done - which I did. When you worked on something, you were coding it alone which meant it was all on you. This was great given that I was still fairly early in my career. While there, I built a specialized installer to be used for a new CA product. I also worked on another product designed to use a modem (yes, they had modems back then) to retrieve stock quotes and other information from a central server. This was all done using C++ and MFC as the primary technologies.

Tax Shop was a tax accounting software company that built "shrink wrap" commercial software for accountants. Fresh out of college, it was a good start for me. I learned the ins and outs of commercially developed software with tight schedules and quality control. While there, I worked independently to develop a completely separate module. I wrote it from the ground up myself which also was a great learning experience for a budding young engineer. Back then, we were using Pascal and Borland user interface frameworks, so it also was a well structured language environment.
