I am a Senior Principal Scientist and Project Manager dedicated to helping clients reduce impacts of energy development on wildlife. My primary experience is working with wind, solar, transmission, and distribution projects and researching how to best reduce impacts to birds and bats. My biggest passion is using GIS and statistical models with large data sets (big data) to answer scientific questions: - I developed landscape-level predictive models in the Prairie Potholes to predict abundance of wetland birds based on habitat and climate.- I built multi-state collision risk models for birds and bats affected by wind development in the central United States to assist developers in siting wind facilities at landscape scales.- I designed an electrocution risk model for Bald Eagles and Wood Storks in Florida which predicted a relative level of electrocution risk for each pole in the system. The model provides a repeatable and scientifically-justified approach to prioritizing pole retrofits on the highest risk poles before retrofitting lower risk poles.While I enjoy the high-tech side of science, project management and client relations are also a central focus of my work: - I believe there is always a solution to a problem or challenge.- I enjoy working in teams and using each person’s talents to solve a problem. - I listen more than I talk.
