One of my favorite poets is Robert Frost and one of my favorite poems is "The Road Not Taken" which has one of my favorite lines "Two Roads diverged in a wood, and I took the one less traveled..." My path, from being a child of Haitian immigrants growing up in New York, to joining the Navy, the first in my family to do so, to becoming a Computer Science Major while growing up in a family full of nurses, is a road that hasn't been traveled in my family. My parents instilled what I called “The Immigrant Mentality”, where for them arriving to the states in the late 80’s, working as a teacher and Certified Nursing Assistant, they taught me that I needed to work twice as hard to make it in America. Coming from a family full of CNA’s, Home Health Nurses, and RN’s, I thought my path was to go the health care route. I joined the Navy after struggling with college and just needing some direction. I spent my time in the Navy fixing and maintaining electronic alarm equipment such as fire, door and airflow alarms. I also repaired and installed cabling for intercom systems and phone lines. While I learned a lot in the navy and enjoyed my experience, I also learned that I was ready for a new chapter and decided to get out to find a different road to travel.While I knew that I didn't want to be a technician in the Navy any more, I didn't know what I wanted to do. While I found successes as a Corporate Trainer, a General Laborer, and in retail, I found myself not enjoying the journey either. Ultimately those things became a way to pay the bills, but I wasn't passionate about what I was doing, so I then decided to go to school to take up the family business in Nursing. Early in my nursing program I had an idea that this wasn't the thing for me, but I spent a year thinking that I would grow into it, but it frankly didn't happen.I then started asking myself some questions like "why am I doing this?" and couldn't find an answer, so I thought about my background in electronics and assumed that Computer Science would be a natural fit. What I enjoyed the most was the difficulty in this degree, and wanting to know more. I immersed myself in the culture, connecting with other programmers and attending talks, finding comfort in the fact that even professional programmers found this field difficult. For once, I am enjoying this journey.
