Joined the family business and moved back to Nottingham in 1984, having had a few years with a large multinational after University. The business developed and expanded and I took over as MD in 1994. Most of the business was Bulk Fuels, mainly as a distributor for Esso. I hived off the lubricants part of the business in 2003 setting up as an Esso/Mobil lubricants distributor, FOS Lubrication Ltd before selling the fuels business later that year. Six staff moved with me in the new venture.

I joined Alcan Aluminium in 1981 as a Graduate Trainee, based in Banbury, Oxofrdshire. After the initial training I covered a variety of roles, including sales liaison, marketing liaison, business and financial planning. I became effectively PA to the Marketing Manager, working closely on a number of projects including a costing exercise working with outside consultants, the first 5-year plan.
