Founding member of the Discovery business unit within TerraCycle, a global sustainability company dedicated to developing solutions in recycling and reuse. In the Discovery business unit, our mission was to find valuable insights that consumer waste may provide, to share with either the consumers themselves, the manufacturers, or other third parties such as public health agencies. Our focus was creating a direct-to-consumer gut microbiome baby wellness test in the U.S. called tiniest Biome, created in partnership with the Huggies brand (Kimberly-Clark).My core duties were to:- Lead collaboration with corporate global innovation directors and senior R&D managers- Provide customer-centric, digestible scientific web content- Assess and communicate U.S. HIPAA and FDA medical device regulations- Review legal policies for Privacy and Terms of Use- Establish and consult an external scientific advisory board- Onboard and direct lab service providers- Develop lab assays and conduct data analysis- Aid business development and marketing efforts- Interview with the Press- Conduct post-use interviews with consumers

Development of molecular diagnostic methods for the detection and identification of pathogenic microbes and other pests from complex environmental samples such as soil and water.The separation of pests from their surroundings is a key challenge that our lab and our collaborators aimed to improve, by modifying extraction chemistries, by creating new assays, and by building microfluidic devices. Our collaborators included the National Research Council Canada (NRC), the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), and Natural Resources Canada (NRCan)Our work was published in esteemed journals Lab on a Chip, and the Journal of Applied Entomology:- Micromixer for separation and collection of pathogenic spores from water Titled: Integrated air stream micromixer for performing bioanalytical assays on a plastic chip (2014).- Definitive identification tool for wood pests: ambrosia beetles Titled: Real-time PCR identification of the ambrosia beetles, Trypodendron domesticum (L.) and Trypodendron lineatum (2015).

Development of detection methods to identify unfriendly plant destroying pathogenic cousins of algae that can swim. Their evolution and their molecular traits were also focal points of my studies. DNA barcoding, DNA sequencing, and Bioinformatic / Phylogenetic methods became my forte throughout this work.The Eastern Cereal and Oilseed Research Centre (ECORC) where I studied, is located on the historical Central Experimental Farm which was established in Ottawa in 1886 by an act of Parliament. The Centre leads Eastern Canada (Manitoba to Prince Edward Island) in crop development, targeting corn, soy, spring wheat, winter wheat, oats and barley.Inside ECORC, I had a hand in The Canadian Collection of Fungal Cultures, which is the largest collection of its kind in Canada and acts as a repository and distributor of fungal genetic resources for national and international researchers. This Collection maintains over 20,000 living fungal cultures including strains of significance to agriculture and the environment, representatives of species subjected to quarantine, and strains preserved for patent purposes.

Molecular detection of soybean rust Phakopsora pachyrhizi using a real-time PCR assay in a “sentinel” program for early detection of soybean rust migration into Ontario. Cranberry research conducted in the lab of Dr. C. André Lévesque, in an industry partnership with Ocean Spray. Soybean research was conducted in the lab of Dr. Sarah Hambleton.
