I worked at Johns Hopkins' Bayview Medical Campus, being part of the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Projects included: studying non-covalent interactios between quaternary amines, phospholipids, and protein epitopes, testing novel nanoparticle matrices for mass spectral imaging, and developing a treatment for traumatic brain injuries. We collaborated closely with Ionwerks in Houston, TX.

My graduate research focused on mass spectrometry and ion mobility coupled to mass spectrometry. I built and characterized a novel three ion source - ion trap - ion mobility - qTOF mass spectrometer with ion – ion reaction capabilities. This instrument was used to analyze a unique Arabidopsis thaliana protein.Additional projects included analyzing coal degradation products for novel energy production using DART MS and LC MS instruments and developing novel matrices for plant metabolite profiling and imaging. Plant metabolite extracts were fragmented using CID to determine diagnostic ions.

I worked under Dr. Tony Borgerding’s guidance to implement a novel, selective GC detector for aromatic compounds called ArSLID. I compared chromatograms generated using GC-FID, PID, and ArSLID detection systems. This work was published in Analytical Chemistry in 2004.
