I'm on LinkedIn so friends can find me, not to find work. In 2003 I retired from tech to be a full time dad to my young children. In 2009, with them all in school, I decided to return to work. But this time, rather than go where the money is and make rich people richer, my own undeserved financial blessings obligated me to try to help lift the poorest of the poor, the most disadvantaged and damaged, out of the muck and mire to help them find their own blessings.Today I have businesses and non-profits on the Blackfeet Reservation, where I am a tribal member. Here, I have 500 generations of my ancestors' blood under my feet. In a rootless world short on permanence, how many humans know what that feels like, has that sense of home, that bond with the land?But we have staggering poverty and unemployment, rampant violence, terrible abuse against women and children, short lifespans, and many of our babies are born addicted to meth. At the large annual Christmas events my family and donors from all over the world put on, I carry around little children that cling to me like they have no one else. Our many group homes do the best they can, but what chance do these children have? Last Christmas party I carried around a little girl who squeezed so tight I could feel her tiny fingers dig into me. She buried her head under my scarf and wouldn't be put down. I knew her story and thought: Far too much rain has already fallen into this young life. Can the trauma, neglect, abuse, and disappointment be undone? She needs to feel the sun on her face and wind in her hair after a winter with no end. She needs to know people care about her, that she matters. Her spirit and hopes need to rise above this place. How to beat cruel, historically immutable odds? I see the solution as largely economic. Like most large remote reservations, we lack a viable private sector economy. So increasing household incomes from enterprise, rather than from tax dollar pass-through, is central to most of my endeavors.
