About Greg Larkin

When it’s all over, here’s what I hope people say about me:“Greg Larkin empowered rebels in business to find their tribe, change the world, and make more money - in that order. He built Punks & Pinstripes, a community for Business Punks. He wrote the international best-seller ‘This Might Get Me Fired’ which chronicled his journey into corporate executive leadership after his startup got acquired. He was a decent investor on Wall St. who got lucky and predicted the 2008 financial crisis before anyone else. And he was an astounding keynote speaker. Above all, he was a Dad, brother, husband, and a product of Brooklyn.” "Here's some stuff that Greg believed that made him a superstar:- Never pitch an idea - only pitch an outcome- Innovation only works when there’s a high cost of not innovating- Exponential growth always starts with strange solidarity between punks and pinstripes - Opposition is validation - if no one is trying to kill you then you haven’t yet innovated- In a huge company 'can’t' is usually a weak excuse for 'won’t' or 'don’t'Learn more at www.punksandpinstripes.com

My ideal customer is a C-Suite executive who oversees a portfolio of businesses and trusts me to solve the following problems:- "We've launched great products - but politics killed them."- "We 'innovate' but with no demonstrable ROI."- "The greatest transformations in our industry are all happening to us - not by us."- "We were seduced by innovation pundits - but have never been led by a practitioner." - "We're too siloed."- "We're too slow."Here's what I DON'T help with:- "We're obsessed with a new technology (AI, IoT, Blockchain) - but don't know what problem to solve with it."- "We need this one product to be HUGE. (HUGE only happens with a portfolio of products.)- "We need to build/ expand an innovation lab. (The rest of our business isn't innovative)."

When I die I hope that all the letters from people who've transformed their lives and careers after reading this book get buried with me. This book is probably my proudest professional accomplishment.I wrote this book for the intrapreneurs who need to transform a company that doesn't want to change. The biggest surprise was that its biggest fans are the CEOs who I thought would hate / sue me.I wrote it because too many innovation experts are pundits - not practitioners. They don't know what it's like to have your CEO eviscerate you publicly because you used the wrong font in a PowerPoint deck. They've never endured the daily withdrawals that deplete the soul of the intrapreneur. In This Might Get Me Fired I share everything I learned after my startup was acquired and I had to make the difficult shift from entrepreneur to intrapreneur.

Singularity University believes that technology like AI and the blockchain makes the world more equitable and abundant. I don't. So I left. Exponential technology makes a few people into billionaires, transforms some industries, occasionally makes the world better and occasionally makes the world worse. And the billionaires who espouse tech utopianism are a bit insufferable.

Co-Founder

New York, Ny, Us

I will cherish Recorp for as long as I live - even though it failed. The partnership I built with my co-founder Peter remains one of the most important relationships in my life. Our idea at Recorp was to connect the biggest companies with exited entrepreneurs to build new businesses and fix old ones. Here's what I learned that makes me a better entrepreneur:- Define your ideal customer and say no to everyone else.- Understand who your ideal customer needs to impress and build an alliance with them- Don't mistake a fan for a prospect- You'll see your business partner more than your family. You better love them.

Apr 2019 - Jan 2020

Founder, Principal Consultant

Bowery 315

When I left Wall Street I was so determined to never hide my true Punk self that I named my business after the address of CBGBs. At Bowery 315 I learned that being an ex-employee-intrapreneur made me a valuable and differentiated consultant. I uniquely understood who the client was and what was in their way. Google, PWC, Uber, Nestle, and Sky were some of my favorite clients.

Feb 2015 - Jun 2019

Head Of Product & Innovation (Consultant)

Mountain View, Ca, Us

I loved this job because I got to see Google as a collection of humans that were as flawed, talented, and human as everyone else. I ran product in an innovation lab co-sponsored by Google and PWC. We created groundbreaking software that solves entrenched problems faced by large enterprise and small businesses. Key responsibilities included:- creating user personas with a problem that we can solve in a differentiated way.- building features that can displace incumbents.- crafting an empathetic brand voice - managing the release schedule and product backlog- managing sprint review meetings with engineers and designers- overseeing UX tests - implementing agile best practices- building alignment between corporate investors and target users

Director, Innovation And New Product Development

New York, Ny, Us

I quit Bloomberg in 2015 because I realized that I wasn't solving a single real problem. My days were consumed by coup attempts, counterattacks, and the breakthroughs were too infrequent. Once the threat of poverty and ignominy stopped scaring me there was no reason to stay. I did, however, build a few incredible things while I was there: Designed new tools to help investors navigate non economic events like social unrest or government legislation. Achievements include:Launched BILL, a tool that monitors a shortlist of legislation that moves markets, and keeps track of the companies affected by it. It is one of the most hit functions in the Bloomberg Intelligence product suite.Designed an Extreme Weather Tracker. This tool monitors extreme weather events that affect commodities and equities and determines whether current impacts fall within a historical pattern.Designed a Political/Social Unrest Monitor. This tool quickly identifies political events in emerging markets and identifies the commodities and equities that are affected by them.In any other organization these would have been built 5X faster and made 20X more money.

In my first job out of college I organized blood drives in Brooklyn just as it was beginning to gentrify. A typical day would begin at an old Italian church in Bensonhurst in the morning, sanitation workers in the Navy Yard during lunch, an Atlantic Ave Mosque in the afternoon, and a Williamsburg loft party at night. It was an amazing adventure, in an amazing place going through an amazing transformation.
