The United States has been a stalwart champion of good global citizenry. While an admirable value, ironically our borders – both geographic and cultural – have been thwarting those efforts. Separated from the world by two vast oceans, we have been dichotomously protected from foreign aggression while insulated from embracing other cultures. Fortunately, technology has crossed the great communication divide. Yet are we willing to experience life on another shore? What if we turned from our ethnocentricity and walked a mile in the shoes of our foreign neighbors? That would mean seeing the world through a different lens, possibly glimpsing the golden thread of commonality woven through all humanity.I am an international communicator committed to building bridges of peace through the language of cultural awareness. MY VISION FOR CROSS-CULTURAL COMMUNICATION:♦ The U.S. media will give equal time both to domestic and global news stories.♦ Americans will avail themselves of the English-language editions of international newspapers to gain a far-sighted view of how the U.S. is portrayed by the foreign press.♦ American companies operating internationally will “speak the language” of their host-country, consulting with experts about the cultural norms of the local population.♦ U.S. citizens will live abroad for at least one year to see the results of choices made outside our borders.
