While on assignment to Dow Chemical Canada working with the EHS&S Regulatory Specialist team, I assisted with ensuring the regulatory compliance of Dow Chemical through overseeing the stack testing portfolio, assisting with annual air, domestic and industrial wastewater reports, performing QA/QC on reports prior to submission, and overseeing the Fugitive Emissions Monitoring program. I also worked alongside my team in creating and implementing an Environmental Field Audit program to identify and rectify any actual or potential environmental impacts throughout all of Alberta Operations.

Working with the supervisor, I assisted with landscaping and upkeep of various commercial and industrial properties, install chain link fencing, and perform repairs. I would also help with heavy equipment maintenance and repair, and operate various pieces of equipment (Backhoe, smooth and toothed rollers, loader, etc.) in various capacities. I would maintain a clean and serviceable shop, as well as assist with snow removal.

Working with the client with planning and preparation, my crew execute the testing to ensure the results are accurate and defensible. I oversee the Field Technicians assisting with the job, ensuring they work efficiently and safely while following all associated protocols, work instructions and applicable legal requirements, I use a variety of extractive analyzers to collect data, complete calibrations prior to testing and perform troubleshooting as issues arise.

Working with the Project Manager, I assist with RATA testing, Cylinder Gas Audits, and Compliance testing. My duties include the hauling and setting up of equipment, accurate collection and recording of data, accurate measuring of various parameters, as well as the collection of integrated and grab air samples. I also assist with the creation of reports for the client, permit acquisition, cleaning of glassware and equipment, and job preparation.

I provided a wide variety of services to CES. Starting with the greenhouse, I ensured the plants have the best start possible by working hard to replicate the balanced native ecosystems the species have adapted to. As the Field Supervisor, I worked with the crews to ensure that vegetation was successfully installed at the sites, and work was done in a safe and ecologically friendly manner. Scientifically, I assisted with field vegetation, soil and wetland assessments, as well as project reports. I also designed, construct and install equipment necessary for the greenhouse operations, experiments, and plant and tree installations. I also assisted as an Assistant Pesticide Applicator with the Integrated Pest Management department of the company, and acted as Safety Officer for the company, by creating company safety plans and reports, and assist with documenting and reporting any workplace injuries, illnesses, or near-misses.

Working in the field and the greenhouse, I assist with the day-to-day greenhouse operations, as well as planting native species into ecosystems designed to mimic native conditions, mainly in storm pond management sites. I also assist with data entry, and winter preparations of the greenhouse.

Working in the field, I collected a variety of samples, including ground and surface water samples, air samples using high volume air samplers, methane testing, and samples of waste for compliance analysis. I would also collect data using a variety of data loggers, monitor groundwater levels, and conduct site inspections.

Working on the research and development of an experimental sample digestion technology (ColdBlock), I would assist in the processing and dilution of samples for testing with ICP-OES and ICP-MS machines. I would also prepare elemental standards for the calibration of ICP-OES and ICP-MS machines, maintain and clean the laboratory space, glassware and equipment, as well as research scientific papers

While working for AAFC, I assisted in research on Plum Pox Virus (PPV), which included handling infected plants in a sterile containment room. Duties included inoculating plants with PPV, maintaining colonies of aphids for inoculations of live plant tissue with PPV, as well as the preparation of leaf samples for ELISA and real-time PCR testing to diagnose PPV infections. I would also make the master mix for real-time PCR analysis.

While working for Niagara Research, I collaboratively worked with the Photonics department towards creating a detection system for Powdery Mildew (Erysiphe cichoracearum) in a greenhouse setting. This work included maintaining plant and fungi cultures, including propagation of plants using cuttings, as well as the inoculation of plants with powdery mildew spores.As part of my work, I would write weekly and monthly update reports for the other researchers keeping them up-to-date on any developments or issues. I also assisted in writing a laboratory experiment on plant tissue culture, as well as a chapter on phenology for a custom textbook.
