“Purpose is the intention to contribute to the well-being of others.” – Dr. Angela Duckworth. Often, people think money is the key to success. Although money can indicate success, it does not guarantee happiness or fulfillment, and what is financial success without fulfillment? At 37 years old, I found myself at a crossroads; I was successful financially but deeply unsatisfied internally. Growing up poor with very little as a child, I seemed to have it all as an adult - my business card said I was a vice president at a Fortune 500 company. Yet, I was unfulfilled at Goldman Sachs after 12 years in the industry. I didn’t leave my work each day feeling a sense of fulfillment; something was missing. My career didn’t have a higher purpose beyond getting wealthy. Knowing that I needed a change, I started on my personal purpose journey. I spent several months reading a stack of books and taking numerous personality tests. After pulling together a handful of questions and exercises, my personal purpose started to come together. The end result was a weekend retreat to create a personal profile that includes my purpose to make an impact and my mission to make a living. My purpose: help creative leaders figure out how to leave a mark. My mission: help entrepreneurs make better decisions for meaningful financial outcomes. I finally had my true north that aligned my desire to live a wealthy and fulfilled life. When my manager couldn’t help me integrate my personal purpose and mission into my role at Goldman, I resigned to launch my own wealth management firm. Running my own firm allowed me to integrate purpose, mission, and entrepreneurship. This also allowed me to incubate a process to help others do the same.Everyone deserves to prosper on purpose and with purpose, but a culture of intent cannot be achieved without purpose-centered leadership.
