Worked with Morphotecnics to design and build 3D printed micro-batteries. Constructed a “build at home” 3D printer using pre fabricated mechanisms with the main structure being drawn and cut through the use of a laser cutter. This printer was then personally customised and adapted in order to meet the needs required by the project (e.g. varying deposit densities). The printer was then rigorously tested with a number of “deposits”, models and scales, allowing any inaccuracies or glitches within the system to be altered. Following research into battery design and technology, 2 pastes were devised and produced that, in theory, when dried would form working anodes and cathodes. These anode and cathode models were then printed, using the 3D printer, and tested to establish their conductivity. This culminated in the production of a paper at the end of the placement detailing the design, construction, experiments and findings. This placement gave me first hand experience at working alongside graduates, performing designated tasks with limited guidance and instruction. This allowed me to use my ingenuity and problem solving skills to discover problems and evaluate the most practical, efficient and cost effective measures to overcome or mitigate these issues. The project also allowed me to hone my research skills. This was a key part of the project as the project brief offered a range of possibilities in design, materials and size therefore I had to establish the "ideal" design as well as the design that would be possible with the resources and time given.
