Associate In Research
Between October 2013 and December 2014 I was a field technician for NASA/Duke Integrated Precipitation & Hydrology Experiment in Western North Carolina. I assisted in the preparatory and planning for the Extended Observation Period (Oct. 2013 – Oct. 2014). During this time I scouted and contacted land owners for instrument installation approvals. To obtain the best data, I submitted and received permits for use instruments in National and State Parks. To prepare for the Intensive Observation period in May-June 2014, I conducted over 20 rain gauge and Parsivel installations.During my time prior to and during the IPHEx campaign, I maintained instrumentation, disseminated data, and collaborated with colleagues from NASA and Duke University. To prior to analyzing the rain gauge data I designed programs to compile rain gauge data, quality control, and process using gauge calibration coefficients. To analyze data I created a programs for rain gauge and disdrometer analysis.While conducting fieldwork, I led undergraduate students to +30 rain gauges for calibration and maintenance 3-4 times a year.Aside from my work in Western North Carolina, I planned, supervised, and led a 3-week excursion to Peru to install rain gauges in the Andes Mtns. To complete these tasks, I obtained necessary materials and determined best sties for each rain gauge installation. While in the field, duties were documented, consolidated, and reported all work accomplished.

Graduate Research Assistant
As a research assistant on a seven-member project my duties performed while studying the climate and vegetation impacts on the surface energy balance of a temperate wetland increased throughout my time as a research assistant. My major duties included: field instrument technician, monitoring field instruments, and analyzing data and determining the amount of open water saved when an invasive vegetation species is removed. To complete my task, programming data-loggers to read and store multiple measurements and equipping atmospheric instruments to study climate variables in the lower level boundary layer was needed. The construction of a fully operational weather station in rough terrain while maintaining two other weather stations, which included a new instrument in scientific research called a Large Aperture Scintillometer, was also required for the research. Aside from the maintenance of instruments, the creation of a real-time data collection WEB server was needed for the examination of current weather data and possible errors for the network of stations, along with judgment and knowledge of the physical meteorological parameters where used to ensure a working network. Once data had been collected, data was reviewed and analyzed to ensure accuracy, and processed the data to acquire a comprehensive knowledge on the matter at hand. Programs and methods such as ArcGIS, Matlab, Microsoft Excel, and Remote Sensing techniques were used in aiding the work performed. Throughout the research, current results were given to the funders through reports and/or oral presentations for decision making processes. Quarterly written reports were composed and presented. While working, collaboration was developed with others outside of the field to ensure the work was done correctly and accuracy of conclusions were maintained. While ending work as a researcher, the management and creation of manuals and operating procedures for others were consolidated.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
The goal of the project was to measure rainfall on mountaintop to understand the local microclimate and assist climate models in correcting algorithms in climate models. Tasks included: Calibration, installation, and maintenance of rain gauges outdoors on the rugged rocky mountain tops of the Southern Appalachians in teams of two. Rain gauge precipitation data was then collected, verified for quality assurance, and analyzed using Matlab to count and calculate accumulative rainfall for each rain gauge. Eight Duke University graduate students also collaborated with the project for an Intensive Observation Period where the releasing of radiosondes and teathersondes were conducted for a vertical atmospheric study to help understand how mountains in the Southern Appalachian affect the atmospheric processes and climate. In addition to the tasks listed above, time was also spent to find future locations of rain gauges, which involved extensive collaboration with public and private land owners. An increased knowledge of the raindrop zone and specifications for optimum quality assurance was acquired and used for issuing future rain gauge locations. Lastly, weekly reports were created for supervisors of the actives and goals that were attained throughout the week.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
The goal of the project was to better understand cold air damming that occurs in the Southern Appalachians that can cause increased precipitation (snow/sleet/freezing rain/rain) and forecasting problems during winter events. As an undergraduate research assistant, duties for this project included releasing and recording weather data via radiosonde during winter events in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. Collaboration with other colleagues was needed to accomplish the task at hand, but once data was collected, it was stored, graphed, and sent to the local NOAA forecast to assist in their forecast.
