Gregory Blackburn, FAIA is a Principal Architect with Synchronis Architecture in San Francisco. A graduate of the College of Environmental Design at the University of California, Berkeley, he has focused his career upon architecture for science, working in campus settings with colleges and universities throughout California, North America and in England.Greg has led the planning and design of more than 60 architectural projects on 35 academic campuses, including seven campuses of the University of California. His projects have included 31 life science / bio-medical buildings and 19 engineering / advanced technology buildings.Artfully fusing a building’s technical demands with the generous accommodation of human interaction, Greg has created new models for flexible teaching and research space. Greg’s innovative buildings, mostly for publicly funded institutions, not only spark innovation and progress inside academia, but are also widely recognized as benchmark projects, both for architects and facilities owners. His work has been featured in national and international publications including Architecture, l’Arca, Architectural Record, Urban Land, Contract, arcCA, R&D and World Architecture.Greg has been an active member of the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP) and has spoken extensively at a wide range of regional, national, and international professional conferences. He served on three occasions as Design Review Board panelist for the National Institutes of Health in the review of candidate Regional and National Bio-Defense Laboratories, and has been twice honored as Executive-in-Residence of the College of Human & Environmental Sciences at the University of Missouri-Columbia.In 2012, Greg was elevated into the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects, in recognition of his notable contributions to the advancement of the profession of architecture. He is a leader in the evolution of engineering and life science learning and research facilities in higher education, creating buildings that contribute indelibly to the campus communities in which they exist and are particularly notable for their environmental sustainability and instructive character.
