I led the redesign and scale-up of the irrigation system for the world's largest aquaponic vertical farm. The irrigation system consists of pH, temperature, and nutrient control as well as water filtration and distribution ($17M worth of equipment). This project required me to collaborate with plant scientists, chemists, controls engineers, technicians, and senior leadership to develop the functional requirements of the system. I worked with a diverse team of outside consultants to develop the detailed design documentation. Constant communication and creative problem solving were required to keep the project on time and within budget. I also developed prototypes and conducted experiments in order to de-risk key design changes.

I led the outsourcing, upgrade, and manufacturing of six different types of GMP mixing systems ($20M project, 89 units built in 18 months). I also developed a custom industrial reverse osmosis water treatment system. I led these projects from concept through to steady-state operation, which required development of all design documentation (FMEAs, P&IDs, 3D models, CE tech files), equipment verification (FATs/SATs), and operating documentation (SOPs, PM schedules, sanitization forms). For each system, I trained a team of engineers on installing and maintaining the equipment, and technicians on operating and cleaning the equipment.

I helped design, build, and operate a mobile conveyance/spraying/drying system that was used to demonstrate the product and secure the company's first contract. I then led the redesign of the mixing system, where I was able to reduce the cost of the system by 90% while improving key design metrics (mixing time, maximum concentration, uptime, etc.). I directly oversaw and built 11 mixing systems in-house using a cell-based manufacturing approach, and installed these systems at customer packinghouses in California, Peru, and Mexico.
