About Gregory Freihofer
I graduated with a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from University of Central Florida. For 3 summers, while obtaining my PhD, I worked at the Boeing Company with the Applied Physics and Structures technology groups in the Seattle area. The project was funded by an NSF-GOALI fellowship which bolsters the relationship between industry and academia, and the goal was to perform a technology demonstration for an emerging NDE technology to monitor damage in composites. I recently started working for Northrop Grumman in June 2015.Specialties: Composites. Matlab. Non-destructive evaluation. FEM. Nanocomposites. Aerospace materials. Mechanics, Failure analysis. Spectroscopy. X-ray Diffraction.
Listed skills include Matlab, Spectroscopy, Composites, Mathcad, and 10 others.

Gregory Freihofer work experience
A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
Postdoctoral Researcher
Mentoring graduate and undergraduate students. Authoring, submitting, and publishing in scientific journals and conference proceedings. Won 2nd best paper in PhD category at SAMPE CAMX. Expected to attend AIAA SciTech 2015 in Orlando. Work pertains to significant findings from piezospectroscopic coating research, and its implications on the non-destructive evaluation community.
Graduate Research Assistant
I have been assisting in the development of a top-notch research laboratory under the guidance of my adviser Dr. Raghavan. Over the years of working in the Laboratory I have become the manager of Laboratory and am responsible for the equipment within. Over the years I have worked in several different areas including: CNT composites, Nano Fabrication, Fluorescence and Raman Spectroscopy, Mechanical Testing, Microscopy, Piezospectroscopy, Matlab programming, System integration, Team Development, and Leadership development.
Nsf-Grant Intern For Structures Technology
I have been developing Matlab algorithms for correlating piezoelectric sensor data to crack growth. The application is for structural health monitoring, and the effort is to continue substantiating the method as reliable and robust. I have also initiated an effort to model the piezoelectric sensor waveforms in an explicit ABAQUS FEM model. I have learned how to program with python to manipulate ABAQUS FEM job input and output files. Used supercomputing access and programming to run FEM models.
Research Assistant
The summer of 2013 I was funded by the NSF-GOALI program which funds academic research which industry oriented goals. I returned to the Applied Physics Lab at The Boeing Company to develop Piezospectroscopy as a Structural health monitoring tool. During this time, I coordinated the development of alumina composite (ALOX) coatings which were applied to composite substrates and tested to failure. Results showed significant potential in Piezospectroscopy as an up and coming method to monitor stress and damage in structures for industrial purposes. Our work is currently under review for publication in a scientific journal.
Applied Physics Intern
I worked for Boeing as part of a NSF GOALI fellowship which aims to link academia and industry. I was working on Boeing projects while trying to learn as much as I can about all the different NDE techniques. During my time, I built my own Matlab codes to analyze and characterize a new NDE technology. My work was published in an internal Boeing document.
Graduate Teaching Assitant
Taught laboratory sections for Aerospace Measurements and Feedback Control for Fall and Spring semesters. I learned how to use a variety of different experimental equipment which interfaced with LabView and Matlab including: strain gauges, pitot tubes, accelerometers, microphones and thermocouples. The labs usually consisted of 20 students and I taught 3-4 sections a week.
