I am a researcher, teacher, and student - especially of trees, fungi, evolutionary ecology, symbioses, music, and good Spanish-language novelsI love trees (and other plants, too) and especially how they interact with nasty fungi (pathogens) and friendly fungi (endophytes, mycorrhizae, and other mutualists). I feel most at home in the tropical rain forests of Panamá, with a close second in the central coast forests of California. My professional goals are to understand as much about what shapes and maintains diversity in natural ecosystems as I can, and to bring as many people along for the fun ride as possible. I work in California ecosystems (forests and prairies around Santa Cruz, California) as well as in the rain forest of Barro Colorado Island and Parque Nacional Soberanía in Panama. In addition to my position at the University of California, I am a Senior Research Associate at Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama
