Our data expertise is in projects related to Power Trading, Outage Analytics, Grid Operations, Load Study and Forecasting and Algorithm development for automatically generating data from large streams. Sources are typically trading systems, forecasting tools, real time and historical control systems. and really anything you can query.ASCE also works with clients to write proposals for government agencies, and awards programs and one of these submitted to DOE secured 20 million in Smart Grid funding. One of our favorite product offerings is an innovative Dashboard system which uses the latest Microsoft technologies to display analytics data from around an enterprise.ASCE's Load Study tools integrate with our Dashboard system to provide utilities a window into changes in load attributable to renewables, energy efficiency, regulatory shifts and customer behavior changes, as well as shifts in technology that cause changes in consumption.

When WEF when rolls into town they hire writers with multiple languages to sit in on sessions and write up summaries and analysis of discussion which is posted to their Website to enable transparency. The events are a large production and considerable fun. I worked Argentina and Brazil, Digital Divide initiatives, fiber and data projects, and philanthropy.

Palo Alto, Ca

We built the predecessor to today's voice web server, a VoiceXML parser. I set up the development lab which included a PBX, and many flavors of OS and computers. We kept the wheels turning and the code was eventually rolled into susbequent releases and products still in use today. Nuance had a fun team. Microsoft aquired Nuance and the rest is history.

Our team worked on global Y2K compliance for Microsoft. This required setting up hundreds of computers with sets of software for analysis and test across the Microsoft range.

Kirkland, Wa

In 1998 Cegelec ESCA's Oasis software was used to control some of the largest electrical grids in the world. It was widely regarded as the best control system software available. This was attributable partly to being an awesome team, and partly to being down the street from a pre-Internet Microsoft Corporation which provided knowledge transfer. The ESCA Control System was used primarily for large scale utility and control system deployments (i.e. reasonable sized countries). I was hired as part of a bid to provide the control system for all of Mexico through Mexico's national grid provider Confederacion Federal De Electricidad (CFE). The ESCA control products were later acquired by Areva, and some other parts of the company were acquired by Schneider Electric. I still work with some of these folks. A really high quality set of people revered to this day by anyone who used their products. Great skills coupled with a great workplace.As part of the process we had to manage a massive document base. I configured a DEC Alpha system with an early RAID 5 array via Ultra-Wide SCSI to serve as a company document repository. The folks at Xerox PARC in Palo Alto had used Microsoft's first classic ASP platform to develop a Web-based document management product that we used to manage an array of PDF's to keep the company moving forward.

I worked with the Pagemaker group (which had been acquired from Aldus, based in Seattle). Our group supported the After Effects digital video editing product suite, which was sold as the big brother to Adobe Premier video editing products. I supported marketing activities and trade shows and developed a few presentations using Adobe's products. The apex was a 500 slide data-driven presentation representing sales for Latin America using Adobe's PowerPoint proiduct of the time. That one was a lot of fun.

Mexico City Area, Mexico

As a student and former exchange student (Mexico, Honduras) I always learned a lot from newspapers. So I was thrilled to land a job out of college with Novedades Editores in Mexico City. Novedades published daily newspapers in English and Spanish, as well as several magazines including "Mascotas" (Pets), Better Housekeeping, Hot Rod and a wide variety. The firm's media products were distributed from Mexico for sale throughout Latin America and the Caribbean which at that time had 463 million people.As international section editor my job involved monitoring newswires to select stories for publication, then participating in a daily publishing cutoff meeting where stories were chosen for the following day's national circulation newspapers. We printed articles on a Harris photomechanical printer (the first digital typesetting system in Latin America) which would output photo paper fresh into a stop bath. This would go to the "formadores" who used exacto blades and an expert hand to lay out the text on wax boards which we would approve or reject. A year later Macintoshes replaced all this. I was told it was not better, at least for several years.The company had 50 NEXT workstations which Steve Jobs personally flew down to set up in 1991. Some hiccup in the firm's relationship with Mr Jobs caused him to leave without saying goodbye so the NEXT workstations sat on the desks of whoever wanted one. I grabbed several and took over graphics for the paper. I configured a NEXT workstation to download graphics in TIFF format from Gannett Media. This required connecting a 128K modem from Mexico to Miami for hours each day. The graphics were a very popular selling point for the papers.After Novedades Editores I dove back into PageMaker, LaTex typesetting, and this lead me to work at Adobe in Seattle where PageMaker was based (from the Aldus acquisition), as well as AfterEffects, and Adobe's Premier video editing product set.
