Wildfire Risk Management Specialist
I create bespoke software/tools, and model forest fuels and fire behavior to assess the risk of wildfires to forests, communities, and utilities.Projects undertaken:• Built an automated hourly CFFWIS weather database, which is updated daily from ERA5-Land data (1950 - Present)• Conducted a Canada-wide assessment of trends in CFFWIS variables (via NRCAN gridded daily CFFWIS datasets) since 1980, to identify days with analogous conditions to the present, and to project trends into the future to identify when specific weather thresholds may be exceeded• Modelled fire behavior and flame characteristics to assess the risk of wildfire to over 3 million individual assets in FortisAlberta's electrical distribution network. Sources of wildfire risk included direct flame contact, ember exposure, heat exposure (via custom Python heat flux module), and smoke/ash exposure.• Modelled dozens of forest and fuel attributes from hundreds of fuel plots across Canada, the results of which were used as the training dataset for Forsite's FuelID tool• Assisted with the creation of the largest LiDAR-derived fuel dataset in Canada (over 3.5 million ha @ 10m resolution), and built Python tools to: (a) post-process (QA/QC) each fuel dataset; and (b) iteratively process FlamMap/MTT fire spread and FOFEM mortality and emissions modelling across the 3.5 million ha landscape.

This data is used to assess the efficacy of fuel treatments throughout British Columbia.PICS Wildfire & Carbon Project:I use Python to convert Carbon Budget Model outputs (from GCBM & CBM-CFS3/4) into forest fuel datasets. These datasets are used in fire behavior models to quantify the effects of fuel treatments and biomass utilization on carbon and other GHG emissions through time.
