Profile bio

About Gregory Harbert

I want to innovate and create. I have a great deal of motivation, and I embrace new tools and approaches as a means moving forward. The unique batch of experiences and skills revealed below reveals a path that travels though a variety of exciting places. And through it all, I have worked to innovatively enable artistic and business visions. The through-line of my work is innovation and communication. To begin with, I worked for several local and regional news and information publications as a writer and photographer, eventually moving to publishing and editing "The Santa Cruz Arts Journal". The Journal became one of the earliest publications to go online in the late 1990's, and to only use desktop publishing as the only means of production. I taught performing arts at both the public high school and state university systems. My classes focused on art and design analysis, and the development and production of full-length performing arts pieces. The results produced by the students were amazing, and the benefits included not having to pay for rights to produce shows, and building strong team dynamics based upon what each individual brought to the table. Bottom line: it once more made theater affordable in a contemporary school setting.I was an events technical directing at two universities, an opera company, and for numerous other productions spanning over two decades. I also directed, wrote, and performed in a variety of works. New approaches, new tools, utilizing the innovative uses of spaces, and in particular, the early adoption of new design and staging techniques including projection mapping in the early 2000's made a huge difference with audience engagement and affordability. Through all of my work, I wanted to understand what really drove the creation of and response to art, so I researched the effects of art upon the human brain for my Masters Thesis. Using a neurological lens, I developed a new approach to analyzing art. Now I work for NASA, where I essentially act as a communications specialist, and sometimes even as a resident storyteller. I was part of the team that NASA Aeronautics relied upon to provide the speedy transition to remote work utilizing collaborative tools.I believe in creating a safe and positive work environment where all stakeholders feel valued. I enjoy bringing people together to the table and manifesting a shared vision for the benefit of all. And I love being a part of a team who shares a common vision of success.

Collaborative Technology And Event Production Specialist

Current

Moffett Field, California

As part of the virtual meeting team for NASA Aeronautics, we became crucial during COVID, as reliance on virtual meetings became complete overnight. During COVID, we innovated new ways to offer virtual conferencing as well. Our goal was to do what we could to advance NASA's use of the collaborative technology tool kit, and jump ahead of the technology curve. Over the last four years, I have been lucky enough to work on four teams, which often shared team members, who have won the "NASA Administrator's Group Achievement Award."My job duties:1) Provide virtual and collaborative meeting support for Aeronautics management and project team activities at NASA Ames for NARI, NAI, Space Bio, and ARMD at NASA HQ. Facilitate meetings and events as well as run the collaborative technologies and produce the broadcast of virtual conferences and live meetings & conferences for Ames and external organizations. Provide technical support for collaborative conferences and meetings using Zoom, MS Teams, WebEx, and Mezzanine technology in specially configured collaboration rooms. My job includes providing collaborative enhancements that promotes research between geographically dispersed teams. I record, edit, and archive virtual and recorded meetings and conferences.2) Develop and create various media content, including science communication videos, podcasts, and other media projects. Unusually for NASA, due to the lack of existing footage of the near-future, my team and I get to help produce visions of the near-future for NASA researchers to better understand how their work fits into the big picture. 3) Assist with the design and creation of state of the art meeting spaces.4) Research and implement "best practices" for collaborative technology and meeting room design, with an emphasis on physical and psychological inclusionary elements.

Jan 2018 - Present

Performing Arts Instructor

Millennium Charter High School For The Arts

Salinas, Ca

My prior experience in performing arts allowed me to receive a vocational credential for teaching in California Public Schools. I taught five performing arts related classes per semester, including one production class taught in tandem with Hartnell College. As all these classes were new, I was able to create new curriculum that featured an emphasis on design and technical operations, as well as writing, directing, and acting. Our focus was on new content development and vocational training, and I produced and directed about three shows a year.

Aug 2015 - Jun 2017

Performing Arts Technical Director

California State University Summer Arts

Seaside, Ca

In 2011, as an extension of my position as performance technical director at CSUMB, I was offered the opportunity to support the first year of the CSU Summer Arts program at Monterey Bay. In 2016, while no longer the performance technical director at CSUMB, I was invited by the CSU Summer Arts program to be the technical director for their last season at Monterey Bay. This was the most fun summer I ever had as a technical director. I was responsible for training crew members, scheduling, working with the Summer Arts Production Manager and acting as a liaison to the artists performing with the program. I examined all tech riders, and planned the use of resources based upon the provided information. In some cases, I proved basic lighting design and other support. I oversaw the implementation of the tech rider and the building of the technical elements as needed. I ensured all that safety and labor cases were enforced at all times. I also was responsible for all the technical aspects of the live productions, including troubleshooting technical problems and managing any concerns brought-up by the Summer Arts Production Manager or the artists.

Jun 2016 - Aug 2016

Performing Arts & Conference Technical Director

Seaside, Ca

For just over a decade, I was responsible for all the technical aspects of the public events and performances put on at CSUMB, at the World Theater in particular. I coordinated the pre-production preparations for events, presentations, and productions. I attended production meetings, and provided input and advice on scheduling, staffing, and technical needs for events. Acted as a technical and production liaison between crews, facility and campus staff, and producers/presenters. Enforced house rules and policies, including local and state safety and labor regulations. Maintained and upgraded, as needed, all events oriented equipment and facilities on campus. Provided over site for crews and production staff during productions, and managed technical troubleshooting and any issues brought-up by CSUMB Staff or the production staff and/or artists. I hired and trained new production crew as needed. Acted as a lighting and scenic designer for many in-house campus productions, and was responsible for delivery of campus A/V services. Helped create and maintain the infrastructure that eventually produced around 100 live video events. I was also the advisor for the campus Empower and Performing Otters clubs.

Aug 2004 - Aug 2015

Technical Direction & Lighting Design

San Juan Bautista, California, United States

Perhaps the biggest honor I've had had professionally is to help support the work of Luis Valdez at his El Teatro Campesino. Off and on through the years, I was able to help produce a variety of shows, including Zoot Suit, and his most recent play that I was his initial lighting designer for when it first ran in San Juan Bautista, Valley of the Heart.

May 2005 - Aug 2013

Performing Arts Production Supervisor For The Arts Division

Santa Cruz, California

I acted as an events technical director with additional responsibility for maintaining and upgrading the performances art venues operated by the Arts Division at UCSC (including the performing arts and music facilities when not in use by the academic departments). I Hired, trained, and scheduled crew members, met with producers/clients to determine resources required for the facility, equipment, and crew, and in addition, I planned, coordinated and supervised the technical elements for all the live performances at the venues managed by the Arts Division. Throughout the technical preparation and during live events I was responsible for the troubleshooting of any technical issues, acted as a liaison to other campus staff, faculty, and administration, and enforced house rules and policies including local and state safety and labor regulations. I was recognized for two years in a row as an outstanding staff employee within the Arts Division.

Aug 2001 - Aug 2004

Publisher & Editor

The Santa Cruz Arts Journal

Santa Cruz, California, United States

This was a free 20-page quarterly arts tabloid that covered arts-based news and events from around the Monterey Bay area, and really the only one of its kind. The theory was that local arts related businesses wanted to support the arts, and artists needed support of the local print media. This publication bridged the gap and help to build to local arts economy. This was one of the earliest publications in the Monterey bay Area to have on online version published as well as a print version.
