The Detroit Charter Revision Commission is responsible for examining and revising the basic governance document establishing and governing the relationships between the people of the city of Detroit and local government, relationships between Detroit’s three branches of government and the roles, responsibilities and conduct of local government as a “Home Rule” municipality within the State of Michigan.Responsible for office administration, strategic program design and public policy research including liaison with local media, development of operational budget ($1.2 million), research key programmatic initiatives for consideration by Commission, administer and coordinate affairs of (9) nine-member elected Board, established and maintained cooperative research relationships with area universities to supplement resources for the Commission, developed strategic plan for Commission including community and media outreach and educational strategy, assisted in drafting of proposed Charter revisions for submission to Governor and Detroit residents. The work of the Charter Commission resulted in the successful passage of a new Detroit City Charter on November 8, 2011, designed to eliminate local corruption, establish standards of conduct, re-district local election boundaries, seek innovative programmatic solutions to grow local government, create transparency, increase citizen access to government and democratize policy making board and commissions.
