I have been at the North Carolina Zoo for 38 years.In 1984 I started in housekeeping for 10 months, cleaning and keeping the park clean and safe for visitors and other employees.In 1985 I started to work in the Vehicle Maintenance shop as a general utility work doing services on all the equipment that the zoo owned. Examples trams, trucks, tractors, lawn mowers, gators, Cushman utility vehicles and any other ground equipment used by hort and animal keepers.In 1996 I received the title of team leader doing scheduling of service on a monthly basis, ordering parts and keeping an inventory of all fluids, grease, tires, filters, etc., that we need to perform a service or repair. I was over 4 employees at this time.In 2015 the zoo developed a supervisor job for the vehicle shop of which I was hired for. My responsibility changed a little to still being responsible for keeping up with and be responsible to track waste fluids, used tires disposal, batteries and making sure they are all disposed of properly and record keeping yearly for all. I order parts and keep up with all inventories of parts to be used for the assigned task. Responsible for 3 other employees by assigning work orders on a daily, weekly and monthly bases. I am responsible for job performance on a yearly basis for my team. Our year runs from July 1st through June 30 of the next year. I am responsible for approving leave. I schedule their daily work orders. I am responsible for scheduling service for over 400 pieces of equipment on a computer run system called Facility Dude. I enter work orders, putting in part numbers, prices and time allowed to perform the task. I enter information about the service and closing completed work order daily. Also responsible for safety and inspection of vehicle lifts weekly, fire extinguisher monthly, keeping the employee work environment safe and clean. Keeping up with a monthly state inspection and services and dealing with local venders and our own zoo customers. I have taken classes at local community colleges (small engine repair). A lot of your equipment like the trams are a unique piece of equipment and most of the repairs are normal, but a lot are very special to those pieces of equipment. We also work with gas/propane trams. I have also taken several Supervisor Leadership classes offered thru the State Of North Carolina and some that the zoo itself offers.
