I oversee the Sunday front-page presentation of the fifth-largest newspaper in the country. That includes designing all enterprise projects, special social card presentations as well as breaking news. I art direct and manage print production of all investigative stories, most recently a nine-part series about police failings to investigate sexual assault cases in Minnesota. That series, "Denied Justice," was a 2019 Pulitzer Prize finalist and received high honors from the Society for News Design's 40th creative competition (two gold medals, one silver medal, 11 awards of excellence and one of three candidates for Best in Show). Last year, I worked across departments to conceive and execute an extensive series of 12 photo essays covering the Minnesota State Fair. These special sections generated nearly half a million dollars of revenue for the company. I was the lead visual journalist for the 2018 midterm elections as well as the obituaries of Sen. John McCain and President George H.W. Bush. In 2016, I planned and led all visual storytelling of the newspaper’s ambitious coverage of the presidential election, which included designing and art directing more than 500 newspaper pages over 15 months. I was the lead designer when Prince died, not only building the front page of his hometown newspaper but also leading efforts in designing a Sunday commemorative section. During my tenure, I have earned two gold medals, three silver medals and more than 75 awards of excellence from the Society for News Design. I have also been honored with multiple photo editing awards from NPPA and POYi.
  • Star Tribune

    Star Tribune Sep 2013 - Mar 2016

As a designer in the news department, I art directed and designed the Sunday Minnesota section as well as the Sunday Science & Health section. In addition, I designed the front page several times a week including on big, breaking news days such as the historic Supreme Court gay marriage ruling and Pope Francis’ visit to the U.S. I led efforts to revamp the presentation of the Sunday Business and Sunday Minnesota sections. I earned several awards of excellence from the Society for News Design for coverage of the national Target data breach and the 2014 election.

That redesign was awarded first place for page one newsmagazine format, first place for typography and second place for overall look of a newsmagazine format newspaper from Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s 2013 Gold Circle Awards.
