WHO WE ARE:The St. Francis Emmaus Center, a subsidiary of St. Bryce Missions/Caritas is located in Turrialba, Costa Rica, the nearest city to the Chirripo indigenous reservation. The center, modeled off the internationally-lauded model of "pregnancy waiting homes", provides a safe, comfortable place for up to 30 Cabecar mothers, who must journey long hours on foot to have access to medical care, in the days before and after the birth of a child or in the event of the hospitalization of a child. WHAT WE DO:Mothers and children are offered housing, nutritional meals, access to all services of Costa Rica's internationally-acclaimed government healthcare system, and advocacy to ensure full comprehension and completion of medical requirements. In addition women are offered childbirth education and the accompaniment of a trained doula during labor and birth, support in initiating successful lactation, education, and advocacy for early bonding, and increased recovery time before returning to their homes long walking distances from access to medical care. WHY WE DO IT: In the mission to save lives, the St. Francis Emmaus Center makes a difference. With over 400 mothers and children passing through the center annually, the success of the initiative has been lauded by numerous government agencies, including the local hospital and health system and the national committee for indigenous affairs, we received remarkable news and a letter from the director of medicine in Turrialba, Costa Rica that Caritas played a major part in the reduction of infant mortality in the indigenous reserve by 50%.

Mr. Gregory Mitchell is Founder and Executive Director of Caritas Veritate Missions, a Catholic 503(c3) non-profit that is faithful to the teachings of the Magisterium of the Catholic Church. His organization aids poor Catholic missions worldwide in maternal and children’s healthcare, building water wells, chapels, and sustainable development. Caritas Veritate Missions builds maternity waiting homes for at-risk women and children near hospitals to reduce infant and maternal mortality while bringing the pro-life teachings of the Catholic Church to the local population. In Central America, Mr. Mitchell built and operated a maternity waiting home for an at-risk indigenous population with the blessing of the local Bishop, which reduced infant mortality by 50%. As a foreign missionary, he created and implemented evangelization and catechism programs for unevangelized indigenous peoples and helped to bring them the sacraments of initiation into the Catholic Church. He has organized and led large medical and short-term missionary groups from the United States that medically attended to over 1,200 people in 5 days. Mr. Mitchell has studied theology at a graduate level at Holy Apostles Seminary in Cromwell, MA. His wife, Dr. Melissa Beth Mitchell, and him frequent the Sacraments and travel extensively to the foreign missions to supervise projects and evangelize.
