Gregory Nell SC has been practising at the New South Wales Bar since August 1991, predominantly in the area of Admiralty and Maritime Law, and is recognised as the leading silk in that area in Australia. After graduating from Sydney University with a B.Ec LL.B Gregory was admitted as a solicitor in NSW in 1983 and commenced employment with Norton Smith & Co. From 1987 to 1989, Gregory worked at Hill Dickinson, solicitors, London, exclusively in shipping and insurance. During that time, he was admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of England. Upon returning to Australia in 1990, Gregory resumed employment in the shipping department of Norton Smith, before being called to the Bar in August 1991. He graduated with a LLM from Sydney University in 2000 was appointed Senior Counsel in October 2006. Gregory is a foundation member of New Chambers. Since his admission as a barrister, Gregory has appeared in many of the leading admiralty cases in Australia. He also practises extensively in the areas of insurance, aviation, private international and commercial law and has appeared regularly in the Federal Court and inter-State Supreme Courts. Gregory is also a long time member of the MLAANZ and has presented papers at many of its conferences, as well as at the Federal Court's Admiralty and Maritime Seminars. Gregory taught “International Carriage of Goods” and “Admiralty Law” in the University of Melbourne Law Faculty’s post graduate programme in 2004 and 2009, and is currently co-teaching "Maritime Law" at the University of Queensland's TC Beirne Law School. In 2000 - 2001, Gregory was a member of the Advisory Committee to the Australian Law Reform Commission in its “Review of the Marine Insurance Act 1909”. From Nov 2005 to Nov 2006, he was one of the Counsel Assisting in the Oil-for-Food Inquiry. Gregory is currently the president of the Anglo Australasian Lawyers Society and also the Chair of the Australian Maritime and Transportation Arbitration Commission.
