I met Greg Rec as a grad student at the Missouri School of Journalism in 1997. He was a relatively new staffer at the Portland Press Herald and I was looking to interview a working photojournalist for a class of mine. He gave his time generously, sharing insights into his work habits, methods of making successful pictures, and success stories. I did a few internships and worked with the AP out west. I settled in Portland in 2000 and have been freelancing here in Maine since then. I've seen Greg on location numerous times. He gets the job done with consistent creativity for his paper - and is a pleasure to work next to as a competitor, of sorts. I wouldn't say that about everyone in this business. In 2008, he graciously agreed to speak to an adult ed class in Photojournalism which I taught in Bath. He provided current and clear information on his art and craft to a group of amateurs who enjoyed the presentation and asked tough questions. He handled them with grace and honesty. If you read the PPH you've seen Greg's great pictures every day. I would obviously recommend Greg's commitment to making excellent images. Yet, his ability to bring people together around storytelling imagery and serve as a mentor to so many is not published on the front page every day.
