Construction Management Trainee
CurrentThe Dyson Project in Malmesbury was a great first project to be involved in. The construction consisted of a £41 million expansion of Dyson headquarters. There were 4 buildings; a sports centre, energy centre, café and a Large R&D building. I was mainly involved in the R&D building. This was a 8800m2 building and it will be a home for testing, R & D and administration. The structure is pretty unique; to form the first floor and roof slabs, there were 355mm dia CHS columns on a 9m grid, with a hybrid pre-cast/in-situ (but monolithic in terms of its structural behaviour) slab perched on top and there are no supporting beams. The external fabric is entirely large module glass. During the build I was in charge of the flooring package, this consisted of raised flooring with hundreds of access panels for services and the finishes were vinyl and rubber tiles. I was also in charge of the fencing package and the landscaping. I was an understudy to the 2 site managers on the building and I helped out with most other packages from the construction of the building to the finishes. I undertook many other responsibilities during the project that included: H&S documentation (EG fire plans, permits, rams, control logs, etc.) , site logistics, inductions, chairing meetings, fire extinguishers, instructions, orders, etc. I completed the following courses whilst on placement at ISG PlC: First Aid at workFire Marshall AED DefibrillationManaging work at height PASMA SMSTS
