Plans, budgets, and forecasts funds for the school transportation operation, of an urban school district comprised of 22,000 students. Duties include, but are not limited to: overseeing the safe, effective and efficient transportation of more than half of the students attending Arlington County Public Schools, transporting them over 1.2 million miles annually; negotiating transportation contracts for purchasing school buses, routing and field trip software, as well as the salaries for 200 bus drivers and bus attendants; servicing 33 district and three out-of-county schools. Responsible for the direct supervision of six office staff to include a Transportation Operations Manager, Safety and Training Specialist, a Pre-School/Special Needs Transportation Coordinator and three administrative assistants. Manages an annual operating budget in excess of $14 million dollars. Position involves effectively utilizing routing software to redesign and restructure school bus routes; evaluating weather/road conditions; establishing walk/no-walk areas and routes of travel for school buses; and making recommendations to the Superintendent on school openings/closings. Oversees the recruitment, hiring, training, and retention of bus drivers and attendants. Works with transportation staff, school administrators, parents, students, and private agencies to mitigate losses and exposure to liability in order to create a smooth and seamless transportation operation.
