About Gregory Capps
I am a graduate student at North Carolina State University currently working with BETA Technologies' Airborne Electronic Hardware team. In this role, I analyze the flight controls of an eVTOL aircraft from a system-level and have designed and built test rigs to aid in requirement verification efforts using Simulink Realtime software. I also aid in the ongoing development of an autonomous variant of BETA's aircraft, working on the system architecture from designing harnesses to establishing ground station communication. This role has taught me how to work as a systems engineer and has given me invaluable experience contributing to R+D efforts in aerospace while also increasing my confidence with electrical systems and programming.Through my coursework, I have also gained hands-on experiences with UAVs through my elective coursework, research abroad, and senior capstone course. As an elective, I took a class titled 'AUAV Bootcamp' wherein students were tasked with building an autonomous fixed-wing drone with no formal instruction and only performance milestones as guidance. I also took graduate courses on VSTOL aerodynamics and multirotor vehicle performance, granting a more formal appreciation for the flight controls of many UAVs. During my junior year, I studied abroad in Namibia where I and a small team researched how to use various drones to aid in biodiversity and anti-poaching efforts in sub-Saharan Africa. In my senior design course, I served as the Stability and Control lead and systems engineer on a team of five where we designed and built a hexacopter on a $1000 budget to augment post-hurricane search-and-rescue efforts with a ground-penatrating radar and a modular payload. I also worked with NAVAIR at MCAS Cherry Point on the Power and Propulsion team on the V-22 Osprey, where I drafted technical documents to improve maintenance efforts on the craft's AE1107C engines. This role gave me a heightened perspective of the necessity of aircraft maintenance in an aircraft's lifecycle and an appreciation for the considerations that can be taken in the design phase to ease such efforts.
