Multiple businesses run by egos that had been paid handsomely, and their names removed from the door but couldn’t come to grips with it. So, I cleaned house. Over weight, under-performing. Culled a layer of top management, promoted talent hidden within the group based on capabilities and attitude, not on Billings and ability to talk. Fought hard to protect against the perils of poor leadership across in Australia which was lacking vision, temperament and a game plan. Put together a robust NZ leadership team around me, most better than me in so many ways, and they worked well as a team. Better together than as individuals. We constantly over achieved our budgets, and contributed over and over to prop up the expense in Australia. Ultimately, globally the business was lacking on results. I put together a cash 60 day bid to buy the NZ business with no conditions, all cash. Which I felt was in the best interests of the shareholders. My boss felt otherwise. History was on my side. It cost myself personally a lot, but it cost the shareholders more, of which I was one. This is when the leadership you report into has never actually had to fund their own bank balance. They don’t see the big picture, they are narrow minded. -

I’m un-shaven, jeans and a tee-shirt, running through spreadsheets all night and on the plane, caught the 6am flight from Auckland after a 4pm call previous day with Wayman, as they had just walked the leadership out. It was loosing average $50k a week easy. So, get them all crammed in a room, no time for pleasantries, they already thought I was a plonker, Who’s this kiwi fat kit coming here to tell us what to do. So anyway, I said, “ if you don’t go back to your desks and start doing what I tell you, either the person on your left or right or both won’t be here at the end of the month”. Get off your arse and ring OUR clients. You know the ones you are all paid those incredibly high base salaries to do. Any questions ?. One smart arse, said, hang on I was told I didn’t need to come here and cold call, the work just comes in?. Well look around MATE, the ones that said that are no longer here, I am, and my last business I managed had a 44% ebit return, this one would be lucky to see 4%. Now before you all go, which AFL team do none of you support? I became a Melbourne supporter that day. 12 months later I saved a few careers, a couple thanked me and have gone on to be very successful, a few others don’t even know I did, but think they are brilliant (I’d never work with them again), and I was promoted, to bigger things. -
