For environmental studies and permitting at Burns & McDonnell, I am the technical and scientific leader for the following services:• basic limnology (study of lakes) including bathymetric mapping, water quality measurement and assessment, sediment sampling and analysis, aquatic biology• stream ecology including cross-section and flow measurement and analysis, water quality measurement and assessment, and aquatic biology• fisheries studies to support Section 316(a) and (b) compliance• discharge plume mapping and modeling for water quality compliance• water supply analysis for new facilities such as power plants• support for Environmental Impact Statements and Environmental Assessments for water supply projects and power plants

Managed projects for start-up company that was trying to commercialize the capabilities of the Kansas Biological Survey and the Kansas Applied Remote Sensing Program.

- Managed field station for the conduct of numerous aquatic ecosystem level toxicity testing in 0.1-acre ponds and 10.5-foot diameter fiberglass tanks.

- Supervised a survey of eastern Kansas’s main-stem streams to assess water quality and aquatic biota under conditions of low flow and high temperature. 30 sites were sampled diurnally for numerous water quality parameters, macroinvertebrates, and fish during a 29-day period in late summer.- Used bioassays to determine whether water quality was the factor responsible for the poor performance of a new fish hatchery in Kansas. Numerous 7-day larval fish bioassays with fathead minnows, channel catfish, and walleyes ruled out the water sources as the cause of the high mortality and slow growth of fish at the hatchery.- In a departure from Dr. Howick’s focus on aquatic ecology, Dr. Howick wrote the environmental analysis section of the State of Kansas’ proposal for the Superconducting Super Collider.

- Prepared research proposals and grant applications.- Started an aquatic mesocosm study to test the ecological affects of turbidity.

I coordinated a Clean Lakes Project on a larger Midwestern reservoir. This study involved monitoring the physical, chemical and biological condition of the lake for a year as well as gathering information concerning the lake's hydrology, bathymetry, watershed, recreational usage and economic value. These data were used to assess the condition of the lake and recommend a restoration plan. The data indicated that the lake was highly turbid because of wind-generated resuspension of sediments. Working with a geotechnical engineer and a forester, I proposed a multi-faceted approach to reduce wave action on the lake using tree windbreaks, dredging, and the in-lake disposal of dredge spoils in novel containment structures. These structures were also designed to provide additional windbreaks and sedimentation basins in the arms of the lake.
