Homeschool TeacherUnc Carolina Center For Educational Excellence Sep 2013 - Apr 20149201 Seawell School Road, Chapel Hill, Nc 27516I created a challenge-based course that integrates the real-world practices of authentic science research, sustainability and entrepreneurship. The course is a result of my personal interests in project-based learning, engineering design, authentic science research and lean start-up entrepreneurship. My approach to teaching stems from my life experience as a published protein biochemist, a consultant to a local start-up, a community organizer and 15 years as a fully licensed science teacher. Both my degrees (Bachelors and Masters) are in science. I do not have a formal degree in "Education." I see my science background as a strong asset. Nevertheless, I do read and incorporate state-of- the-art research-based learning and teaching practices, which I have culled from top Graduate Schools of Education. In particular, just to name a few, I've read and used practices taught at Harvard (Visible Thinking Project), MIT (Eric Mazur's Just-In-Time and Peer Instruction), Berkeley (Berkeley Evaluation and Assessment Research) and from multiple institutions that are conducting research related to student mastery of the abstract concepts of science.
