We are scholars who publish books and produce documentaries. We are best known for writing biographical profiles of over 17,000 Native American artists. Nine volumes have been published in our "American Indian Art Series." We presently direct the World History of Jewelry and Beads project. "World History Of Jewelry & Beads: 100,000 Bc To The Present"Gregory Schaaf, Ph.D., Director Jan 2000 - PresentWorldwideThe purpose of World history of Jewelry is to advance the study of jewelry history by establishing a public record of important objects of jewelry and beads . . . and to share them with the world. This project represents a worldwide survey of jewelry history arranged chronologically from 100,000 BC to the present. Each digital image of jewelry is accompanied with a caption, identifying the date, culture, design, techniques, materials, provenance, and artist when known. Commentary by noted specialists in the field will be shared, along with scholarly footnotes and original sources. Periodically more images of jewelry and text will be added. Please follow our updates. World history of jewelry and beads is a topic of importance to people around the world. While studies of world art history often focus on large objects, we believe much can be learned from the study of small items, such as jewelry and beads. Our study includes the mapping of major trade routes of raw materials to places of manufacture to the distribution often over broad geographic areas. The symbolism and designs of jewelry and beads will be a special focus of scholarly research. We seek to better understand the significance and meanings of jewelry and beads in context with historical and cultural developments. This project is designed to make unique contributions to the preservation and celebration of world heritage. We hope this website helps to network specialists, scholars, curators, collectors, students, and other interested individuals, organizations, institutions and museums.
