I helped customers find specific merchandise they were looking for. Sometimes, I helped customers find what they were looking for outside of my department. One day, a customer was looking for a ride-on vehicle for kids. I did not see any out on the floor, but I got the scanner and scanned the display. The scanner said that they had the ride-on vehicle in the back of the store. I retrieved some help and took the ride-on vehicle to the customer. The customer was satisfied and thanked me for getting the ride-on vehicle for her.

I continued the education process by making sure the substitute teacher plans were followed to the tee and that the students were on task.At an assignment at Triton High School, there was a student that was angry because I told him that he needed to sign his name last because he came in late. He became mad at me because he felt as I was singling him out. I politely told him that he needed to sign his name last because he came in late and I was not singling him out. I did not scream; I just talked in my neutral voice. He eventually calmed down and signed his name last.

I continued the education process by following the substitute teacher plans and implementing effective classroom management. I made sure students were on task and did not disrupt the class in any way. At an assignment at Ann A. Mullen Middle School in Sicklerville, New Jersey, a math teacher was absent. The plans told me to go over the answers for students’ math problems. However, I took the directions a step further. Instead of simply giving them the answers, I went over each problem with students step by step and had them participate by calling on them to complete each step of the problem. The students knew a little bit more than they knew before.

During my internship with NJPIRG, I advocated for the use of open textbooks. I wrote a letter to the editor talking about the benefits of open textbooks; that letter was later published in the Cumberland County Times. I also researched the benefits of open textbooks and other universities who used open textbooks for some of their courses. As a result my advocating, I learned how to advocate for change and policies by using many different methods such as letter to the editor, petitions, and formal e-mails.

For one article, I was assigned to cover a date auction. Before the auction began, I asked specific students for students who were responsible for the event and who would give me significant information about the event. After the auction was over, I asked specific students who were responsible for the event questions about the event. I wrote their quotes down and condensed them into my article.
