Economic Development ManagerShoalhaven City Council Sep 1985 - Jul 2022Nowra, Nsw, AustraliaI have transitioned into retirement after heading up a specialist Economic Development Office within Shoalhaven Council on the south coast of NSW, Australia since 1985As the ED Manager, I thoroughly enjoyed my working life as a Regional Economist in the various tasks that I had been asked to undertake and deliver on behalf of the Shoalhaven, especially the business community.I look back and see hundreds of projects/jobs and the benefit that they have brought to so many:• Expansion of HMAS Albatross as a “super base” and creation of a specific defence support precinct at the Albatross Aviation Technology Park• Attraction of public sector employment including the South Coast Correctional Centre; Helicopter Aircrew Training Service; Office of Local Government; Naval Aviation Systems Program Office; NSW Fisheries• Estab of private secondary education – St Johns HS & Nowra Anglican College and an outreach facility for Sydney's Trinity College.• Estab of a campus of Univ of Wollongong, firstly at Berry and now at Mundamia• Improvements to rail & road infrastructure that brings freight in/out of Shoalhaven• Development of a HML capable road crossing across the 600m Illawarra Escarpment• Devt of marine infrastructure to support the maritime industry, delivering services to mariculture and tourism• Stimulating industry sectors that saw the employed labour force of the Shoalhaven double to in excess of 39,400 • Lower the unemployment rate by half to be at a 40 yr low • Growth in the supply of employment lands across the ShoalhavenI enjoyed a level of trust from both the Council and the Executive team to represent and present the Shoalhaven position as best I could for the benefit of not only this area but for the wider region. At times my comments may not have been received well, but the economic benefits were recognised and several of these projects are now eventuating.Soundly based arguments, combined with passion, always seemed to be a winning formula. -
