My journey of getting programming/web development/software development as a career choice is probably not what you would usually hear. I've always been interested in computers ever since we got our first PC who knows how many years ago and I enjoyed using it creatively for school assignments (I used screen shots from the 'Rise of Nations' game for a history assignment). Throughout my school years I would use computers pretty much everyday, however, I wasn't that great a mathematician and that pushed me away from ever trying programming (I think I may have tried creating some macros in AutoHotkey and some simple batch files but nothing complex). You know, smart people do computer programming. Fast-forward to the end of High-School and I had no idea what I wanted to do. I ended up going to university to be close to my sister who was studying veterinary science. Uni was a blast but I was doing a safe marketing degree and had no idea of career progression or what job I even wanted to do. I worked a part-time job and did the grind of applying for 'relevant' jobs to no avail. After my graduation I packed up and moved to Canada to work at a ski-field which was an amazing experience where I grew a lot as a person and met life-long friends. When I came back to New Zealand I went to work figuring out what I wanted to do: I applied for many different roles and even tried to get into a trade school to become an electrician. I'm glad I didn't get in in hindsight. I finally applied for the ICT Graduate School that the University of Auckland provided and just scraped past the entry requirements. After that first class on HTML the proverbial light-bulb flickered and I was hooked and I realised I could do what I thought only smart people can do. My passion for programming and development is growing everyday and I cannot get enough of it and I can't wait to learn more, increase my skills, and create innovative applications.
