Qualcomm acquired Airgo in 2006. ** Oversaw transition of Airgo organization into QCT. Airgo team spearheaded creation of next Wi-Fi standard 802.11ac & developed first Qualcomm Wi-Fi chips for cell phones. ** Built mobile Internet device business for Qualcomm. Created Gobi global multi-mode mobile broadband product line, brand, marketing program and sales program - defined strategy, organized team, created product roadmap; drove development program & supply chain program; shipped first commercial products. Signed contracts & drove product launch with AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, Vodafone, Orange, Deutsche Telekom, Telecom Italia, Dell, HP, Sony, Toshiba and ASUS. ** Provided strategic advice & analysis to Qualcomm CXO leadership to shift chipset product line to multi-mode 4G/3G (LTE/HSPA+/EVDOrC). Provided strategy for 4G/3G chipset technology roadmap, product plan, & market positioning. Advocated that rather than "killing Qualcomm's IP licensing value" as was feared by Qualcomm's leadership at the time, this 4G/3G industry roadmap was the only practical way the industry could adopt 4G and would "extend Qualcomm's IP licensing value for a decade". On this advice, Qualcomm combined three different 4G engineering development groups into one engineering team focused on delivering world's first multi-mode 4G/3G chipsets. This announcement shifted global carrier and cell phone OEM roadmaps over to multi-mode LTE, EVDO and HSPA chips, effectively ending 802.20, LTE and WiMax. This enhanced the growth in sales for Qualcomm's cellular chipset line. ** Departed Qualcomm to return to Silicon Valley entrepreneurial activities.http://www.qualcomm.com/gobi

Oct 2006 - Sep 2008

Founder, Ceo And Board Member

Founded Airgo with five friends (VK, Dave, Ali, Richard and Geert). Started operations out of our guest house in Woodside. Created world's first MIMO wireless chipsets, networking software, reference design systems and commercial OEM products. Airgo chipsets and software went into over three dozen global OEM products. These products became popular with consumers, business users, product reviewers and retail distributors due to vast improvements in connection reliability, speed, range and ease of use. This motivated the wireless industry to use MIMO as the basis for all new 4G and WiFi standards. Airgo proposed & spearheaded the IEEE 802.11N MIMO WiFi standard. The wireless industry designed MIMO into the following 4G standards: LTE, HSPA+, WiMax and UMB. Authored and co-authored 12 academic papers and patents. Airgo was acquired by Qualcomm in 2006.

Feb 2001 - Oct 2006

Vp Engineering, Wireless Internet

Cisco acquired Clarity Wireless in 1998 and Dr. Raleigh became VP of Wireless Internet for Cisco. Led engineering team that developed the wireless technology, networking technology, base station products, customer premise products, provisioning systems and network management solutions for broadband WWAN. Created VOFDM standard and the IEEE Broadband Wireless Internet Forum (BWIF) standards group with over 70 member companies. VOFDM was the highest performance point to multipoint wireless system in the world at the time and was used for MMDS WWAN networking by Sprint, MCI and other smaller MMDS spectrum operators. This VOFDM technology architecture and standards specification became the foundation for the IEEE 802.16d standard and "WiMax" (802.16 d and e) and also became much of the core RF signal processing technology for the first OFDM Wi-Fi standard 802.11a. Co-developed Cisco strategy for entering Wi-Fi business. Authored and co-authored 23 academic papers and patents. Departed Cisco to return to entrepreneurial activities in Silicon Valley.

Sep 1998 - Jan 2001

Clarity Wireless - Founder, President, Cto And Board Member

Founded Clarity with two friends (VK and Mike) out of the lower level of our coastside house in El Granada, CA. Clarity was the first to commercialize smart antenna OFDM. These products broke through all performance horizons that existed at the time for broadband wireless access. Clarity also created the fundamental MIMO technology patents that now form the underpinning of the latest 4G cellular and WiFi standards. In 1998 Clarity demonstrated an unlicensed band wireless system that transmitted 100Mbps error free for two weeks in 20MHz of 5GHz spectrum at less than half a watt, with a range of over 6 miles in non-line-of-sight multipath fading environments with interference. This performance was two orders of magnitude above anything else being contemplated at the time and still sets the standard for multipath broadband wireless access links. Authored and co-authored 35 patents and papers. Cisco acquired Clarity shortly after the VOFDM system went into field trials in 1998.

Jun 1996 - Oct 1998

Ph.D. Fellowship

Starting in 1996, published the first series of papers to conceive and mathematically prove the wireless capacity benefits of MIMO radio signal processing. Overturned a century of research and lines of thinking in the fields of radio science and wireless communication theory by revealing and incontrovertibly proving that a new class of MIMO signal processing architectures provide a vastly improved available performance horizon by multiplying the reliable information rate (data speed) of wireless data systems in multipath conditions. Invented, prototyped, tested & published the first MIMO OFDM coding and decoding algorithms & systems. Invented, prototyped, tested & published the first MIMO OFDM channel estimation algorithms & systems. Invented, prototyped, tested & published the first MIMO OFDM signal synchronizations & systems. These DSP concepts, architectures, algorithms & system designs first published in a series of papers starting with a Nov 1996 IEEE conference paper are now taught as essential principles of wireless communication & have been adopted by industry as the core technology inside all 4G standards. Also, first to solve and publish several other long-standing problems in smart antenna theory & algorithm design including: a precise and compact discrete time channel model for multi-antenna systems in the presence of multi-path & time variation; FDD forward link beam-forming based on revers-link multi-antenna channel estimation in the presence of multi-path & time variation, & a reliable adaptive CMA algorithm that operated well in the presence of multi-path & rapid vehicle speeds. Designed, built & prototyped the world's first SDMA base station system that would process two AMPs mobile calls on the same frequency channel in the same vicinity while traveling at rapid speeds. Authored 18 academic papers/patents. Passed Ph.D. oral exams in 96 before founding Clarity Wireless. Completed thesis dissertation write up after Clarity was acquired in 98.
