I was fortunate to start my career at AT&T Bell Laboratories in New Jersey, the birthplace of UNIX. Throughout my professional journey, I have been able to utilize the technologies I worked on during my time at the labs. I have worked on various UNIX implementations since then. As a systems analyst at Cray Research, I was assigned to NASA Goddard Space Flight Center to maintain their UNIX variant, UNICOS, on the Cray YMP, which was the fastest computer in the world at that time.Transitioning to storage virtualization at VERITAS, I worked with technologies like Veritas Volume Manager, File System, and Cluster Server, which helped me establish my expertise in data center management. As part of a team dedicated to serving "business critical" customers, I took on the role of a "fly-to-site" engineer, tasked with handling complex support cases onsite and collaborating directly with customers to resolve issues.The events of 9/11 brought my role into sharp focus, as I was interviewed by TIME Magazine in the days following the attacks. I was dispatched to assist specific customers who had lost their data centers or key personnel responsible for managing their data, aiding in the recovery efforts.Currently, my focus is on observability of compute systems and applications, including the logs they generate. My early experience with UNIX has evolved into expertise in container technologies and orchestration tools like Kubernetes, alongside logging tools such as fluentd and fluentbit. I prioritize technologies like OpenTelemetry and Prometheus, along with other tooling, to facilitate metric exposure regardless of their source.
