This project is a unique opportunity to apply my knowledge in designing sustainable and immersive glamping spaces while contributing to the growth of this vibrant industry. The site, which had been left fallow for some decades, is being recast into a picturesque rural retreat that takes into account the site's natural attributes. Nestled within rolling pastures and native bush, the property features three ponds fed by intermittent streams along the property's boundary, creating a natural, tranquil setting perfect for a glamping experience. In the initial development phase, we are focusing on placing distinctive glamping abodes around these picturesque ponds, ensuring each is strategically positioned to maximize privacy and immersion in the natural beauty of the surroundings. Each pavilion-style abode is designed to enhance the connection with the environment, offering guests a unique blend of comfort and nature. As the site evolves, we envision a communal area on a nearby escarpment, providing panoramic views of the surrounding rural landscape. This space will include a large firepit and social facilities, fostering a sense of community among guests while they enjoy the stunning natural backdrop.Through this project, I aim to showcase how careful planning and design can harmonize with the natural landscape to create a glamping experience that is both memorable and sustainable. I look forward to using the insights gained from this development to further support clients and stakeholders and contribute to the glamping industry's positive development. Show less

My ongoing research builds on the foundation established during my doctoral studies there. I am presently writing several academic articles stemming from my PhD thesis, focusing on glamping as an expression of experiential travel. Further, using Q-Methodology in my research has led to innovations in this approach, particularly concerning the use of photographic images. Being keenly interested in its systematic processes, I also participate in Q-Methodology academic groups. The phenomenon of glamping combines the outdoors with luxurious hospitality, creating unforgettable stays for guests. Seen as more authentic and sustainable than other forms of tourism, it has enjoyed increased popularity. Despite this, most information comes from scattered descriptions and marketing materials, with academic studies being fragmented and, in the main, regionally focused. My research explores the subjective views of glampers and glamping entrepreneurs and identifies their shared viewpoints. Respondent Q-Sorts of photographic images obtained from glamping websites are collected and are subsequently analysed and interpreted. Q-technique factor analysis is used to identify five key depiction categories: material, outdoor, luxury, typological, and congruence. How these holistically combine into grouped perspectives enables glamping profiles or Gestalten to be induced. Five distinct Gestalten are discerned: comfortable campers, active nature minimalists, glamorous venturers, cosseted traditionalists, and unwinding bathers. Considered collectively, a glamping framework is theorised, expressed in terms of ‘glamping spaces’ and ‘glamping experiences’. My ongoing research advances the theoretical understanding of glamping, paving the way for further exploration of its attributes and potential impact on the tourism industry. Show less

While glamping evokes simple imagery, there is a juxtaposition that provides an element of mystique and adventure, heightened by historic connotations and romantic visions. It has garnered significant publicity through its association with festivals such as Glastonbury and Coachella. Although experiencing considerable growth, its manifestations are diverse, dynamic and regionally differentiated. If the essence of glamping experience was able to be deciphered, benefits to pro-poor tourism within developing nations could be obtained. However, scant academic research has been undertaken, and none approaching it holistically. The doctoral study aims to identify what characteristics are associated with glamping, tented camps and experiential travel and what particular characteristics aggregated together are viewed as intrinsic to a memorable touristic experience. I began my path at the University of Auckland, earning a B.E. in Civil Engineering in 1978. Initial experience was gained in New Zealand, further built upon at several engineering consultancies in Sydney, Australia. During this time, I studied structural and foundation engineering (M. Eng.Sc.) at the University of Sydney (not completed due to relocation to PNG). A pivotal moment in my career came with my move to Papua New Guinea PNG), where I took on roles with Cameron McNamara Kramer, initially as a Structural Design Engineer and then progressing to Senior Engineer/Office Manager. Working amidst the unique challenges of a developing nation, I developed a profound understanding of resilient design, particularly for cyclone-prone areas. My experience in PNG not only enhanced my technical abilities but also instilled in me a deep appreciation for the impact of engineering on community resilience and development.Upon returning to New Zealand, I co-founded an engineering consultancy in Auckland, going on to establish my own practice in 1988. My work has spanned numerous projects, focusing on sustainable and resilient structural solutions. I was actively involved in the Structural Engineering Society of New Zealand (SESOC), also serving as a contributing committee member for the AS/NZS 4600 design standard, reflecting my commitment to industry excellence and innovation.Throughout my professional engineering career, I have focused on how structural engineering can support broader goals, such as sustainable tourism development. However, over time, I also developed a growing fascination with tourism and its profound impact on the developing world, especially in Melanesia. This led me to a major turning point in 2014 when I closed my engineering consultancy to focus entirely on tourist academic studies. Show less
