Throughout Greg Weaver's career, he has driven groundbreaking news coverage at the intersection of Indiana business and politics. Now he brings all that experience and curiosity with him as editor of Indiana Lawyer. His early Statehouse experiences as a student reporter for the Ball State Daily News taught him the importance of government accountability and transparency. The most compelling episode came as he watched the influential sway of the then-Indiana House speaker water down the state’s conflict of interest law to help Ball State University trustees avoid increasing scrutiny over the student newspaper’s reports that the trustees were investing university funds in their own local banks rather than seeking the best rate of return.That led him to devote his professional life to government accountability and public access, developing the first major computer-assisted journalism project in Indiana as the Statehouse reporter for The Evansville Courier. It would lay bare the connection between campaign contributions and legislative action.Later, he would become the government, politics and business editor at The Indianapolis Star, where he championed the filing of public records requests.He was the editor of a series of Star stories by reporter John Russell that examined the cozy relationship between Duke Energy and state utility regulators, who initially approved $1 billion in cost overruns at a massive new Duke power plant.Ultimately, the state’s top regulator was fired and indicted on three felony counts, and three Duke Energy officials resigned or were fired. The stories would receive many awards, including the Gannett Freedom of Information Award.Weaver also was the lead editor on stories by reporter Tony Cook that broke the news about a scandal that would torpedo the political career of then-Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill. A leaked report that legislative leaders tried to keep secret detailed allegations that Hill had drunkenly groped four women at a post-legislative celebration. As a result, Hill’s law license was temporarily suspended by the Indiana Supreme Court.At IBJ, Weaver has helped guide coverage revealing the Indiana Economic Development Corporation’s controversial plans to purchase 10,000 acres for a massive advanced manufacturing and technology park in Boone County.His push for public access also recently led the Indiana Lobby Registration Commission to provide a way for reporters and the public to quickly search in real time for new clients taken on by Statehouse lobbyists.
