Looking back on my history, most of my education and work have led me to some form of Content and Learning Design.My obsession with writing, my improv training, my work with Shopify, and then with online education platforms like VipKid and Cambly – every bit of work I’ve done has improved my skills in writing, evaluating, and delivering content in the best formats for diverse audiences.Regardless of the learning format – whether it’s synchronous, asynchronous, or blended – converting the knowledge of Subject Matter Experts to content audiences can engage with and retain requires empathy, as well as an understanding of best online design practices and style rules.I’ve developed my understanding of many key skills to help deliver content. • Content Development • Canadian Style Guidelines • Brightspace • Articulate Rise • Articulate Storyline • Writing • Editing • HTMLWith these skills, I’ve created content for online businesses and developed courses for international college students through the instructional design company GEVC.

I first heard about teaching English as a job in high school. Exploring other cultures, sharing a language, and building experiences all sounded so exciting.But it wasn’t until I had worked at Shopify for 2 years that I finally decided to fly to the Czech Republic and get certified to teach with Oxford TEFL.That course taught me how to build lesson plans for diverse English levels from A1 to C2, which helped me adapt to lessons with students of varying ages and levels, tailoring material for education and engagement on the fly depending on the needs of the students.With that education, I taught online for more than 4 years and developed an understanding of what works best for learning in synchronous and asynchronous spaces on the web.

When I applied to Shopify, as someone whose most recent job experience was at a bar in downtown Toronto, I felt unqualified. I knew I’d have to do something different to stand out from the crowd.So, to show my talents and unique voice, I decided to design a website with a product Shopify had never seen before, and that product was facial expressions. From happy to shocked to queasy, I sold them all with custom selfies of my face. And, luckily, that was enough to get me an interview and eventually a job.Working as a Shopify Guru was a fast-paced experience that required 3 important skills: • Quick thinking • Quicker researching • Positive and friendly serviceI learned the basics of HTML and the importance of design in the function and success of any website. Most importantly, I learned how to deliver information in a way that was efficient and clear for customers and audiences across the web.
