Established in 2005 by Belgian native and historical researcher Greta Wagle and two other founding members, the Onrust Project is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the reconstruction of the Onrust, a 17th century Dutch trading ship that was the first yacht ever built in the United States.Greta Wagle and a team of more than 250 volunteers worked for over three years to build the new Onrust. The original ship was built off of Manhattan Island in 1614 by captain Adrian Block and his crew. The contemporary building site was the Mabee Farm Historic Site in Rotterdam Junction, New York. Greta Wagle and the volunteer team worked with materials similar to those used in the original construction and employed traditional Dutch shipbuilding techniques recently rediscovered by ship archaeologists. The new Onrust was launched in May 2009 as part of New York’s “Hudson 400 Celebration” and has since made several excursions on the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers, including to New York Harbor, the ship’s original construction site. Under Greta Wagle’s guidance, work continues today on the ship’s interior, completing the crews’ quarters and incorporating modern navigational equipment into the 17th century architecture.Greta Wagle’s goal is to obtain U.S. Coast Guard certification for the Onrust in time for its 400th anniversary in 2014. When fully complete, the Onrust will be a floating educational center and showcase, providing the public with a unique, hands-on experience of 17th century seafaring, early shipbuilding methods, and local maritime history. The Onrust Project is the most recent in a series of projects led by Greta Wagle dedicated to investigating and promoting the rich history of colonial New Netherland. Greta Wagle also initiated the Legacy of New Netherland Exhibit, an exhibition exploring the links between New Netherland historical trading networks and contemporary New York.
