About Gretchen Klingler
With 14 years of combined experience in military service and serving the American veteran community, I am a strong advocate for the importance of advocacy. Driven by a passion for identifying the interests and needs of communities I am involved with, I strive to connect these communities and individuals to opportunities for growth personally and professionally. Following my active duty Air Force experience learning the Iraqi dialect of Arabic from Iraqi-Americans, immigrants and SIV recipients, I graduated with degrees in Anthropology and Arabic from the Ohio State University in 2019. Initially, my goal was to pursue a career in immigrant and refugee resettlement and advocacy. However at the time of graduation, decreased federal funding for these important organizations and programs meant layoffs rather than new hires. Having continued to be an active leader in the Central Ohio veteran community, I remained flexible and pivoted to working in national veterans networking and outreach - a space I had become intimately familiar with as a student veteran. Building on the full spectrum of my experiences, I am proud to have spent the last 5 years developing my skills as an advocate, storyteller, and outreach professional through a wide variety of professional and volunteer positions. My roles have ranged from providing proponent testimony, keynote speaker, panelist and guest speaker, and leading advocacy discussions with lawmakers and staff in Washington D.C. and in their districts. I have developed outreach strategic plans, led and analyzed qualitative research and focus group discussions, and strive to identify and recruit community leaders who are interested in learning how to use their personal experiences to advocate for policies and programs important to them effectively in a bipartisan manner. As a leader, I believe it is key lead with empathy, curiosity, and a collaborative and inclusive mindset in order to empower others to contribute their best work, lead with their own strengths, and identify opportunities for individual, team, and organizational growth. My strengths lie in constructive discourse, outreach, community building, storytelling, networking, policy advocacy, and qualitative data analysis. Although my present work focuses on my connection with and support for the veteran community, I continue to keep my eyes on my extended interests in immigration, refugee issues, foreign policy and human rights.
