As Director of Strategic Initiatives, I am responsible for providing tactical leadership in the development and implementation of computing projects and research initiatives to extend the impact and reach of the Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (ICDS) through its Interdisciplinary Research Investments (IRIs). I will be implementing efforts in coordination with leadership at ICDS and the IRIs including the AI Hub, AIMI, and others at Penn State to explore new avenues of opportunities and initiatives, including support for large grant development and execution.

This University-wide interdisciplinary research center, Center for Applications of Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning to Industry (AIMI), connects Penn State’s Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) diverse research expertise with corporate and industry needs and unites them in the pursuit of exploring novel AI/ML ideas. AIMI provides a unique opportunity to create industry-sponsored programs and research at the intersection of various disciplines, capturing diverse perspectives, and ensuring the benefits of AI will reach across all aspects of society. In coordination with the AIMI Director and stakeholders, the AIMI Assistant Director directs, leads, and manages activities supporting AIMI goals and program mission.

Responsible as the founding Director for Cornell’s Genome Initiative’s new Epigenomic Core facility, supporting all aspects of crafting a vision and innovating new services, hiring and establishing a cross-disciplinary team. Establishing IT infrastructure to leverage high-performance computing solutions for epigenomics data processing and analysis pipelines. In this first year we have been awarded NIH funding for the development of several novel bioinformatic tools to identify patterns and reveal the organization of regulatory proteins in the yeast genome. We have peer-reviewed publications and manuscripts under review as we have built new collaborations with medical centers and research hospitals.

As a Research Engineer and ACI-REF, Advanced CyberInfrastructure - Research and Education Facilitator, I helped to identify and implement heterogeneous IT solutions, assisting faculty to leverage high performance computing systems. I support the Institute’s various educational outreach and faculty recruitment initiatives. I also assist our researchers by implementing big data workflows, navigating business processes, and providing support for our HPC services.

Architected and Implemented significant IT resources for this research genomic lab which provides Next Generation Sequencing services to the international research community. I work with researchers and bioinformaticists to develop a public interface of the lab’s results, enable access to public and private datasets, develop the infrastructure used to generate sequencing data results, support published works and promote more direct community involvement and interactive work with the experimental data. Responsible for IT management, personnel management, budget management, research administration and data curation. • Established services for secure, authenticated, shared data transfers over research networks leveraging Penn State systems and data curation of over 80TB of genomics data.• Facilitated and coordinated development work and infrastructure to support research computing• Responsible for research budget management of over 2.3 million dollars annually.• Performed project management and administrative functions including management oversight of 22 lab members.• Responsible for providing organizational support for the Center for Eukaryotic Gene Regulations regular meetings, annual events, academic initiatives and help facilitate scheduling and project management for graduating PhD students in the labs. The Center consists of eleven principal investigators, more than a dozen participating affiliated faculty and over eighty members.

IT Project manager for a newly recruited, statistical genomics faculty researcher to help establish Center for Systems Genomics at Penn State. Responsible for IT management, lab management, grant and budget management and big data curation. Our faculty and researchers have been supported successfully to conduct computationally intense research as evidenced by publication of more than 60 refereed journal articles with several pending, over 50 presentations and talks, over 48 poster sessions, coinciding with releasing five scientifically relevant open source software packages.• Established services for secure, authenticated, shared data transfers over research networks leveraging Penn State systems and data curation of over 140TB of genomics data.• Facilitated and participated in research network meetings to coordinate the management of data workflow, tracking and sharing across the networks. • Responsible for research budget management of over 1.5 million dollars annually.• Center used an estimated 5.3*106 hours, or more than 600 years of computational time on the Penn State computing clusters since November 2011.• Performed project management and administrative functions including scope management; schedule management to create and track milestones and verify that deliverables are on time; documentation management; reporting cycles for grants and other funding; frequent project assessments; and project management for software development activities, facilitating testing and coordinating software releases; also responsible for budget management throughout the lifecycle of assigned projects from initial grant proposal through pre-award, post-award and closing of the projects.• Anticipated employee climate issues pertaining to successful project management and completion. • Served in the capacity of two full-time positions during a transitional period for the organizational unit, splitting overtime between systems administration and technical leadership, with technical project management responsibilities.• Technical lead for Penn State’s Active Directory infrastructure, developing and maintaining ITS central service AD implementation supporting over 70 organizational areas and most state-wide campus locations.• IT Project Manager: Project management for a complex, highly technical initiative to migrate distributed file systems for production services to a new platform. Required working with personnel managers and Unit Directors throughout the University to identify and resolve issues. Through this assignment, we were able to foster better communications and forge many new collaborative relationships across the institution.• Server Systems Administration: Provided Active Directory integration w/MIT Kerberos authentication and LDAP authorization systems. AD support and testing of Microsoft Solutions including WSUS, Exchange, SMS, MOM, VMWare ESX administration for the AD infrastructure in a production environment built for redundancy and leveraging SAN storage solutions.
