As a member of Krux' Operations team I previously focused on building out our Cassandra infrastructure, metrics and monitoring, scaling back-end services to meet the high traffic demands of our customers and focusing on stability and fail-safe operations.For a time, I led the daily work of the Operations team, translating overall strategic direction into day to day tactical decisions.

I was SimpleGeo's first full-time operations-focused engineer. I built and lead the operations team, built out automation and configuration management systems, wrote systems software, implemented backups, implemented tools for mirroring production traffic in staging environment, managed the AWS infrastructure, and generally kept the API up and running.

Digg made extensive use of my passion for automation and integration. My team built a "private cloud" for Digg, including custom cluster management software. We integrated tools like FAI and Puppet to give us the ability to provision hardware on-demand. I authored Puppet modules to manage a variety of key infrastructure components like Cassandra, memcache, RabbitMQ, and more. We also contributed patches to Puppet to fix several bugs.

Zicasso has contracted me to design and deploy their information systems architecture from the ground up. So far, this has included security (firewalls and network design), DNS, mail, database subsystems, and monitoring. In progress is the move to a scalable, load-balanced web architecture. I've made heavy use of Xen virtualization to keep costs low and hardware utilization high. All of this is heavily automated using Puppet.

Implemented OpenLDAP-backed authentication and Puppet automation infrastructure.

Provided systems administration and help desk support to a heavily-heterogeneous network in support of several organizations with wildly different needs. Responsible for proactive problem resolution and recommendations for use of technology to meet each organizations's goals. Proposed, planned, and implemented single sign-on solution and corporate directory service, identified key areas of network and process improvement, proposed solutions, and created Twiki-based project management application.

Provided systems support in a 24x7x365 data center environment in support of a high-availability web and email-based application. Provided pager support on an on-call rotation. Planned and implemented migration from SiteScope to Nagios network monitoring, implemented custom service plugins, distributed & redundant architecture, performance metrics, and custom reporting interface. Administered heterogeneous network of several hundred nodes spread across several sites; maintained WAN links, VPN, remote administration between locations; maintained two data center locations with over 125 servers. Analyzed and provided solution to recurring database performance and reliability issues, increased database uptime from approx. 75% to 100%.
